  • RED OAK — Talya G.A. Solon was standing in the hallway outside one of the practice rooms at the Wilson Performing Arts Center last Tuesday, when several shy young ballet dancers slowly approached. Solon saw them approach and the girls said they enjoyed the show.

    The ballet dancers saw a performance of Solon and her musical group, the Yamma Ensemble of Israel, earlier that day.

    “What did you like the most,” Solon asked the dancers.

    The girls responded they enjoyed the music

  • RED OAK — This week is the final week for people to see the latest lobby gallery display at the Wilson Performing Arts Center by Curt Adams.

    Adams said his display was inspired by a graduate student at Drake named Marvin Hill, who had created 3-D woodcuts.

    Hill died of cancer about five years ago. Adams said he thought of the 3-D work Hill did and decided to do a tribute, starting with a 3-D Painting.

    “And then I became fascinated with the whole process,” he said.

  • Calvin and Karla Pearson, of Union, Neb., and Ted and Tammy Yocum, of Mound City, Mo., would like to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their children, Kara Pearson and Jared Yocum.

    Kara is a 2007 graduate of Nishna Valley High School and a 2011 graduate of Northwest Missouri State University. She is employed with Craig R-3 School as a Kindergarten teacher in Craig, Mo.

    Jared is a 2006 graduate of Mound City R-2 High School. He is employed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources at Big Lake State Park in Craig.

  • Robert and Kathleen Means will celebrate their 50th anniversary May 26. Their children, Deanna, Doug and Kent Means, along with their spouses and grandchildren, are hosting an open house at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Stanton from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, May 26. A salad buffet will be served. No gifts please.

    Bob served as veterinarian in the Villisca-Stanton area from 1978–1990. Kathy taught Home Economics at Villisca Comm-unity Schools during that time.  All three of their children graduated from Villisca High School.  

  • The First Baptist Church in Red Oak will be hosting Phil and Pam Morgan, who were the 2011 Prayer Breakfast performers.

    The Morgan’s will appear with their daughter Kayla at First Baptist Church May 19, at 7 p.m., to perform a concert.

    Free will donations are requested and the Morgans will be offering their new cd for purchase, as well as Pam’s book.

    All are invited to attend.

  • Thousands of girls from across Iowa are getting ready to discover what summer camp has in store for them this season.

    Right now girls are able to register for a number of different camp sessions, including sample sessions like “Mom and Me,” which allow younger girls to get a small taste of what life at camp is like. Girls will also get a chance to tour the camps the second weekend of June at several ‘Open House’ events, while camp kicks off the following weekend.

  • For the first time, Shenandoah will be a location for an Iowa State Fair Bill Riley Talent Search as part of the town’s Independence Day celebration.

    Chair for the event and 4th of July committee member, Tess Gruber Nelson, explained the talent show will begin at 5 p.m., at Sportsmans Park, prior to the annual flag retirement ceremony and fireworks display.

    “I’m really excited to see how many contestants we get,” said Nelson. “Regardless, it promises to be a great show.”

  • A Retirement Open House took place at the Red Oak Senior Center in honor of Janet Osheim  Wednesday,  May 9,  from 9 –10:30 a.m., with cake, coffee, flowers and cards. Janet will be leaving her position as manager at the end of this month. She has served with the Red Oak Center for 13 years. Many from the center, community and  several from Southwest Eighth Office in Council Bluffs attended this special event.

  • Kathryn Anderson, of Valley, Neb., formerly of the Villisca and Stanton areas, will celebrate her 85th birthday May 10. Her family would like to honor her with a card shower.

  • The family of Joan Selser is requesting a card shower for her 80th birthday.
