Red Oak teacher arrested for...

RED OAK — A long-time Washington Elementary teacher on paid administrative leave may be facing prison time after his third arrest in four months on harassment charges.

Geoffrey Allan Maurer, 39, was arrested April 29 for two misdemeanor charges, third degree harassment and false report to public safety.

Self-inflicted injuries in...

RED OAK — A Red Oak woman was the victim of a self-inflicted stabbing early Tuesday morning in Red Oak.

Katty Perez, 19, was found at about 4:30 a.m. lying in the intersection of N. Broadway and W. Oak St.  with a stab wound to the right side of her head. She was transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital by Red Oak Rescue and then to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha by air ambulance.

Perez underwent surgical procedures following the incident but is in a stable condition, according to Red Oak Police Chief Drue Powers. 

Elaine Bisbee, 82

Elaine Bisbee, 82, Villisca died Friday, May 3, 2013, at her home in Villisca.

Elaine was born May 23, 1930, to Clair and Alice (Hawkinson) Martin in Isanti County, Minn. She moved to Iowa at the age of seven. Her mother married Vernon Peterson who adopted Elaine and her brother. Elaine attended grade school in Stennett and graduated from Essex Community Schools.

Elfrieda Shaw, 87

Elfrieda “Lee” Shaw, 87, Griswold, died peacefully Monday, April 29, 2013, at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, surrounded by loved ones.

Lee, daughter of Luke D. Patrick, D.D.S., and Elfrieda (Weight) Patrick, was born April 6, 1926, in Wilkinsburg, Pa. Lee was baptized at the South Ave. Methodist Church and was the older sister of Jo Ann Nelson.

Frances Day, 95

Frances Gayle Day, 95, Moore, Okla., died April 26, 2013. Frances Gayle Bailey was born March 12, 1918, in Red Oak to George Andrew Bailey and Emma Adelaide Rush. On April 21, 1940, she married Hubert Alvin Day of Oklahomoa City.

Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Hubert April 21, 1993; three brothers, Ferris, Lester and Donald; four sisters, Georgia and Myrtle Vanderhoof, Darlie Spangenberg and Fren Lindner; and a daughter, Karen Jo Waldrop.

She is survived by two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Marveline Isaacson, 81

Marveline Leona Isaacson, 81, Stanton, died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak.

Marveline, the daughter of Nels E. and Clara F. Anderson was born Oct. 14, 1931, in Stanton. Marveline lived in Stanton her entire life except for a few months when her father, Nels worked for the railroad in Hastings. She graduated from Stanton High School in 1949. After school, Marveline worked six years for the Union Carbide Battery Company in Red Oak.

They shuffle into the Emerson Community Center a little before 7 p.m.; sipping coffee and enjoying a complimentary piece of pound cake, they make small talk.

“How’s your granddaughter?” one elderly lady asks.

“Oh, she’s just a sweetheart, made varsity softball this year, ya know,” her companion responds.

As the clock strikes 7 p.m., Linda Westover, who hosted the April 27 bi-monthly event along with her husband Dennis, picks up the microphone to announce the rules.

Everyone takes a seat.

Marvin Powles

Marvin Powles will be celebrating his 70th birthday May 11. His family is hosting an open house in his honor at the Glenwood Eagles Club, 426 1st St. from 4-9 p.m. May 11. No gifts, please.

Tom Templeton, 31

Tom Paul Templeton, 31, Kalispell, Mont., died April 25, 2013, surrounded by his family.

He was born Aug. 30, 1981 in Atlantic, the son of Thomas M. Templeton and Peggy L. Templeton, both previously of Red Oak. Tommy moved to Kalispell when he was two years old. He graduated from Flathead High School in 2001 and worked at Wild Geese Gardens greenhouses up until the time of his illness. While in Portland for treatment, he attended Portland Community College.
