Two people were taken to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries following an accident on Highway 34, east of E Ave. on Jan. 24.

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, they were called to the scene of the accident at around 2 p.m. on Thursday. Deputies responding to the scene observed one vehicle in the south ditch, facing northeast, owned by Mark W. Euken, 57, of Red Oak. A second vehicle was also in the south ditch, facing northwest. The vehicle is owned by Leanna M. Jensen, 35, of Shenandoah.

Upon investigation, it was determined Jensen's vehicle was westbound on Highway 34 when it encountered a snow-covered portion of the roadway, which caused the vehicle to skid south across the road, striking the eastbound Euken vehicle on the driver's side, where it entered the east ditch and overturned once, coming to rest on its remaining wheels, where it was observed by responding personnel.

All occupants of the Jensen vehicle declined medical treatment. Euken and a passenger were extricated by mechanical means by Red Oak Fire and Rescue and were taken to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Both vehicles were considered a total loss, and sustained significant damage. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office was also assisted at the scene by the Red Oak Police Department, and Iowa State Patrol personnel. The accident remains under investigation.
