Nomination forms are available until March 31 at kmaland.com for the 12th annual Charles E. Lakin Outstanding Teacher Award Foundation will have awarded $400,000 to area teachers and school districts through the award program.. The award is named in honor of the late philanthropist, and Emerson native, who created the award in 2008 to recognize teachers who entice kids to come to school and see teaching as a calling, rather than a job.

This year, two elementary and two secondary teachers, will each receive $10,000 during a special ceremony at their respective schools. In addition, each recipient’s school district will receive $2,500.

Instructors who teach within a 40-mile radius of Emerson are eligible to be nominated for the award. Eligible school districts include: AHSTW, Atlantic, CAM, Clarinda, East Mills, Essex, Fremont-Mills, Glenwood, Griswold, Hamburg, Red Oak, Riverside, Shenandoah, Sidney, Stanton, South Page, Southwest Valley, Treynor, Tri-Center and Underwood. Award winners will be announced in May. Last year’s winners included: Michele Hendrickson, Hamburg, elementary; Brock Johnson, Riverside elementary; Amanda Brandon, Riverside secondary; and Josh Abel, Tri-Center secondary.

Following the awards this year, the Lakin Foundation, in affiliation with KMA Radio and Green Hills Area Education Agency, will have awarded $400,000 to area teachers and school districts through the award program.

In 2017, Red Oak High School teacher Bob Peterson received the award, while elementary teacher Melinda Smits won the award in 2012.
