Sports Calendar: July 10 weekend

-A A +A

It's a busy weekend on the sports calendar as the postseason continues on.

We start with Friday as one area team remains standing in softball regionals.

That team is the Stanton Viqueens, who are making a semifinal appearance for the first time since 2012. The Viqueens face a tough foe in seventh-ranked Logan-Magnolia. The game starts at 7 p.m. in Logan.

The Viqueens reached the semifinals thanks to their 9-2 first round win over Sidney on Monday and followed it up Wednesday with a 14-13 upset victory over Essex.

A win for Stanton over Logan-Magnolia would mark their first appearance in the regional final for softball since 2011. That season, Stanton defeated both Bedford and Corning, but lost to Van Meter in the regional final.

The Stanton bats will be key to their effort against Logan-Magnolia. They'll need big hits from both senior Lauren Stephens and sophomore Chelsea Weis. Stephens has a batting line of .384/.482/.452 this season. Weis has a .319 batting average, as well as a .435 slugging percentage.

Logan-Magnolia had a first round bye. They reached the semifinal with their 13-1 win over Fremont-Mills Wednesday night. Logan-Magnolia is in the regional semifinals for the first time since 2013. That year, they defeated Underwood 9-1 in the semifinals, but would go on to lose in the regional final to Treynor 3-1.

The Panthers have two solid pitchers, but will likely go with Abby Straight. The junior has a 23-3 record with a 1.55 ERA and 222 strikeouts in 163 innings this season. Abbie Carlson is the other pitcher, who is 8-0 and has allowed just two earned runs in 44 innings pitched.

The other semifinal in Region 7 of Class 1A features Glidden-Ralston against Exira-EHK. The game starts at 5:30 p.m. in Glidden.

Glidden-Ralston reached the semifinals with their 9-3 victory over Griswold Wednesday. Exira-EHK meanwhile defeated Lenox 15-9 in the quarterfinals Wednesday night.

The winners of the two semifinals in Region 7 will face off Monday at 7 p.m. in Denison.

Saturday's District Baseball Preview

The district baseball tournament kicks off Saturday for the 1A and 2A teams.

Red Oak is one of those 2A teams as they hit the road to play Clarinda as part of District 15 action. The game will be played in Avoca starting at 5 p.m.

The Tigers enter the district tournament having lost six straight. Clarinda, meanwhile has lost three straight and has gone 2-9 in the last 11 games.

The season series was split with each team getting a win. Clarinda took the first game June 9 when they won 8-7. Red Oak took the second June 29 when they won 7-3.

The winner of the game plays Treynor Tuesday night in Avoca starting at 5 p.m.

The other District 15 game features AHSTW against Shenandoah. That game will be played at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The winner plays IKM-Manning Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Southwest Valley will also be playing in the opening round Saturday night as they play in Class 2A District 12. They'll travel to Stuart to play West Central Valley.

This hasn't been the easiest of seasons for the Timberwolves. They've gone 3-9 since June 23, losing three straight in the process.

West Central Valley has lost two straight, falling to Treynor Wednesday night and Winterset on Thursday.

The winner of the game will play Des Moines Christian Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Stuart.

The only 1A area team playing Saturday night will be Essex, who travels to Sidney to take on Riverside. That game will start at 7 p.m.

The Trojans have had a very rough season. They did catch a break Thursday when they scored a 15-5 win over Clarinda Academy during a doubleheader.

They play a Riverside team that has also had a rough year and remains winless.

The winner of the game plays Nishnabotna Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Sidney.
