Griswold edges Red Oak 1-0 in softball districts

Griswold ended Red Oak softball’s season with a 1-0 win over the Tigers last week.

In a game filled with scoring chances for both teams, Griswold had base runners in six of the seven innings, including the third inning when they loaded the bases with no outs, but failed to score.

They broke through though in the fifth when Keyla Reynolds led off with a single, and advanced to second on a bunt. After advancing to third on a groundout, Reynolds scored the lone run of the game on a wild pitch.

Red Oak had base runners in four innings, but the Tigers best chance to score came in the bottom of the seventh.

Andi VanScoy reached on an error to lead off the inning, and Kristi Yardas and Paige Stoaks each singled to load the bases with no one out.

After VanScoy was forced at the plate on a ground out by Lexi Holmgren, Yardas would be thrown out at home for the second out on a wild pitch.

Griswold pitcher Ali Sindt then struck out the final batter to save the win.

Sindt pitched all seven innings, giving up four hits, striking out five and walking one.

Griswold lost their next game 7-2 in the second round of districts.

Holmgren pitched the complete game for Red Oak, giving up one run on three hits and four walks, striking out nine.

Griswold scored a run in the top of the third to take the lead, but Shenandoah answered with two in the bottom of the frame and one more in the fourth to go up 3-1.

Griswold cut the lead in half with a run in the fifth, but Shenandoah sealed the win with four in the bottom of the sixth to pull away 7-2.

Brittney Hansen led the Shenandoah offense with three hits and an RBI.

Griswold ends the season with a 15-15 record, including an 8-6 mark in conference.
