• Collegiate Honors

    Morningside College student Sabrina Guerra, daughter of Carlos and Linda Guerra of Red Oak, served as an officer in the Morningside College chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) that recently received a national award for efforts to pursue excellence.

    Guerra is a 2014 graduate of Red Oak Community High School.

    ALD is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first-year college and university students. There are chapters at over 275 colleges and universities.

  • Dean's List

    The following students have been named to the dean’s list at Buena Vista University (BVU) for terms five and six:

    • Henderson: Rachael Knight.

    • Red Oak: Mikenzi Monthei.

    • Red Oak: Caitlin Smith.

    Students named to the dean’s list must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 for the two terms, based on a 4.0 grade point system, and must have taken at least 12 hours of coursework.

  • College Graduation

    Morningside College conferred 35 bachelor’s degrees, two Master of Science in Nursing degrees, and 113 Master of Arts in Teaching degrees in August.

    Jessica McFarland, Red Oak, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree.

    Morningside College is a private, coeducational, four-year liberal arts college with a total enrollment of 2,900 students. 

  • College Graduation

    Sydney Grebin, Stanton, is among the new alumni added to the roster of graduates of the University of Northern Iowa. Grebin earned a Bachelor of Arts with a major in family services.

  • Dean’s List

    Sydney Grebin, Stanton, is among the students named to the spring 2017 semester dean’s list at the University of Northern Iowa.

    To be included on the list, a student must have earned a grade point of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, while taking at least 12 hours of graded work during the semester. On the 4.0 system, an A is worth four points; a B, three points; a C, two points, and a D, one point.

  • Dean’s List

    Abbey Pratt, Red Oak, was one of 423 students whose exceptional achievements were honored by the College of Saint Mary with the release of the dean’s list for the spring 2017 semester. Pratt is pursuing a Bacelor of Science degree in occupational therapy.

    To qualify for the College of Saint Mary Dean’s List, students must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher after completing at least 12 semester hours as a full-time student.

  • College Graduation

    Justin Eccles, Red Oak, was one of the more than 7,000 students who received degrees during the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s spring commencement ceremonies, May 11, 2017.

    Eccles earned a Master of Arts degree in Art Education from the School of Education.  

  • College Graduates

    The following area students recently graduated from Buena Vista University:

    • Teresa Sparks, of Villisca, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in educational studies. Sparks attended BVU’s Creston site.

    • Cecily Knapp, of Villisca, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English education. Knapp attended BVU’s Creston site.

    • Casaundra Currin, of Villisca, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in exercise science - human performance. Currin attended BVU at Storm Lake.

  • College Graduates

    Local students who were spring 2017 graduates of the University of Iowa included:

    • Emerson: Benjamin Blank, BS-Mathematics.

    • Henderson: Alena Newgren, BSE-Biomedical Engineering.

    • Red Oak: Courtney Billings, BA-Health and Human Physiology; Brandon Farnum, BBA-Finance; Phillip Klopp, BA-Psychology. 

  • College Graduations

    Dordt College

    Jennifer Allen of Red Oak, was among the 355 graduates of Dordt College who received diplomas at the 2017 commencement ceremony May 5. Allen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Design and Technical Theatre.

    Central College

    Central College seniors graduated May 13, with 238 students participating in commencement.

    Local Central College graduates include:
