  • New State Fair Award to Recognize Iowa’s Farm Families

    Air Force Airman Wyatt J. Kelso has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

    During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

  • Farmers Market vendors

    Montgomery County Extension is hosting a meeting on March 26 at 7 p.m. at the Montgomery County Extension Office for anyone that might be interested in participating in the Red Oak Farmers Market this summer. This is part of the SW Iowa Local Foods Initiative.

  • Sheriff’s Reserve wants members

    The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Reserve is looking for new members. We are a non profit organization dedicated to enhancing proper law enforcement and bringing about a better understanding of law enforcement in Montgomery County.

    Reserve deputies ride at least sixty hours a year with the full time deputies and will serve in a variety of capacities. We assist full time law enforcement by providing extra manpower during routine patrol, prisoner transport, community celebrations, athletic events, and natural disasters. Duty gear, weapons, and uniforms are provided.

  • Joel Herzberg Family Day planned in Villisca

    The community of Villisca is coming together Saturday for a day of fundraising to assist the Joel Herzberg family. The Villisca High School student was critically injured in a snowboarding accident last winter.

    Joel Herzberg Family Fun Day begins with a 5K/10K run and walk at 8 a.m. in the Villisca City Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Cost of participation is $15 and medals for first, second and third place will be awarded in several age classifications. Registration begins at 7 a.m..   • Red Oak RAGBRAI committee releases theme, logo for ride

    Last week’s RAGBRAI meeting at the Montgomery County Family YMCA was well attended. The theme and logo for this years ride was unveiled. ‘Putting together a great ride’ artwork will be on merchandise and promotion materials for the 2009 RAGBRAI.

    With the possibility of 20,000 to 25,000 visitors expected, executive committee co-chair Dave Jennings said, “This is a great opportunity to have RAGBRAI come to Red Oak. We need the community to put their best food forward and welcome our guests and show what a great city we have.”

  • Pony Express Riders pass through county during fundraiser for Camp Sunnyside

    On Friday the Pony Express Riders came through Red Oak, after starting their 2009 fundraising ride for Camp Sunnyside in Glenwood. The Red Oak Ambassadors had lunch ready for the Pony Express at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. From Red Oak, the Pony Express were on the way to Creston. On Saturday they will be in Des Moines for the governor’s ride.

    The Pony Express, which was started in 1968, has collected over $8 million in donations for Camp Sunnyside.

    The Pony Express will be at the county fair this year, offering pony rides.

  • West Central meets needs

    Some think West Central Community Action is a secret too well kept. Family Development Specialist Heather Dollen wants others to know of West Central’s programs that can stretch dollars in this tighter economic situation. Its federal and state funded programs are offered to qualifying residents of 10 counties in southwest Iowa.

    West Central is located at 1411 North Second Street in Red Oak. It is open Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
