Sports Calendar: Tuesday, November 29
The Winter Sports season is now in full swing as many Southwest Iowa teams prepare to compete for the first time this season on Tuesday.
All of the great action starts Tuesday afternoon, to be exact.
Bowling: Red Oak versus Denison-Schleswig— 3:30 p.m.— Red Oak Lanes
Fresh off a state tournament appearance last season, which saw Taylor Mellott win his second straight state individual title and the boys' bowling team finishing second, the Tigers will take to the Red Oak Lanes to face Denison-Schleswig.
Red Oak will look to avenge last year's opening season loss to the Monarchs. Denison-Schleswig won the boys game 2,750 to 2,656 and the girls' meet 2,567 to 2,380.
The Tigers have no shortage of bowlers returning this season, including Mellott. Other bowlers back this season include Brian Wade, David Terry, Hayden Berry, Jayden Hilding, Kristi Yardas and Shelby Storesund.
Denison-Schleswig will be led by Josh Gotto, who finished third at the state meet last season.
Basketball: Red Oak doubleheader versus Griswold— 6 p.m.— Red Oak High School
It's the home opener for both Red Oak basketball teams as they take on Griswold.
For the girls team, they look to win their second straight game this season. Red Oak picked up the 58-32 win over Fremont-Mills last Tuesday.
This season, both teams will feature younger players. Red Oak will be starting freshmen Kate Walker and Grace Blomstedt. While three of Griswold's 10 varsity players are juniors.
Both had good debuts against Fremont-Mills last week. Walker finished with seven points, while Blomstedt had 10 rebounds against the Knights.
Last year, Red Oak defeated Griswold, 44-32.
Red Oak vs. Griswold boys
The Red Oak boys' basketball team meanwhile will take to the floor Tuesday night with a new backcourt.
Red Oak will look towards Danny Carlson and Pete Walker to distribute the ball and run the offense. Both players got the opportunity to run the offense and score several points at last Tuesday's Villisca Jamboree.
The boys game will take place after the girls game.
Basketball: Villisca at Lenox Varsity Doubleheader — 6 p.m.
Girls
The Villisca girls team starts their season, following the Stanton Jamboree and Mount Ayr Tournament last week.
Villisca will face a Lenox team that is looking to avoid starting the season 0-3. Lenox lost to Lamoni and Adair-Casey, last week.
Boys
With the graduation departures of Marshall Dolch and Timmy Myers, the Blue Jays make their regular season debut Tuesday night.
Villisca's key returners for this season are Travis Herzberg, as well as Max Mauderly and Joe McKinley.
Basketball: Essex Varsity Doubleheader versus Nishnabotna— 6:15 p.m.
Girls
The Trojannettes made their season debut Monday night, losing 56-49 to Underwood. Haley Fundermann and Seana Perkins will be the players to watch for Essex. Fundermann (18) and Perkins (15) scored 33 of Essex's 49 points against Underwood.

The Trojans are also coming off of a close loss to Underwood Monday night. Underwood won 53-45. Jordan Jones and Levi Allen both had double-digit scoring against Underwood.
