  • Tigers get first shutout win since 2012 during tourney

     ATLANTIC—The Red Oak softball team picked up its second win of the season Saturday during the Atlantic Softball Tournament.

    Red Oak recorded a 4-0 win against Audubon, the first shutout victory for the team since 2012 when the Tigers defeated Griswold at the Creston tournament.

    Zoey Welter was the star for Red Oak as she tossed her first career shutout, allowing four hits and striking out five Wheelers at the plate.

  • Sports Calendar: June 8

    It's a busy Monday on the sports calendar. Here's a look at what is going on around the area.

    Both Stanton baseball and softball teams will be home Monday evening has they host a varsity doubleheader against Nishnabotna. Both teams look to get back on track after losses to Fremont-Mills Friday. The doubleheader starts at 6 p.m. 

    The Essex softball team goes on the road as they face East Mills. The varsity game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start. Essex's baseball team will be home as they host Lenox. The game starts at 6 p.m.

  • Sports Calendar: June 5

    The weekend is finally here. We have some rain chance for Friday, but they're not quite as high as they were yesterday.

    Day two of the state tennis tournament continues in Ankeny this morning. Red Oak will have semifinalists in both singles and doubles. Kate Walker will be competing in the 1A singles semifinals as she takes on Cedar Rapids Xavier's Allison Jasper. The other semifinal features Denison-Schleswig's Mara Piroscoveanu against Grinnell's Lily Hamilton.

  • Sports Calendar: Tentative June 4 schedule

    We missed out on rainouts Wednesday and got in some games, but that might change for Thursday.

    With much of the area at an enhanced risk for severe weather, there's a lot of rain in the forecast for Thursday morning, afternoon and evening.

    The day starts with state tennis in Ankeny. Red Oak's Kate Walker will compete in singles, while Grace Blomstedt and Micayla Taylor compete in doubles.

  • Sports Calendar: June 3

    With severe weather in the forecast for Wednesday, there is some concern as to whether the games for the evening will go on as scheduled.

    In Essex, it will be the Trojanettes hosting Red Oak in softball action. The first game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at Essex High School.

    In Malvern, East Mills will be home as they host Nishnabotna. The softball varsity team plays first at 5:30 p.m., while the baseball varsity team plays at 7:30 p.m.

  • Red Oak tennis turns attention to state

     The spring season is finally winding down. 

    However, for a few members of the Red Oak girls tennis team, they’ll be focused on the state tournament in Ankeny Thursday and Friday.

    Singles player Kate Walker and the doubles team of Grace Blomstedt and Micayla Taylor will only need to worry about their respective tournaments.

  • Stanton sweeps Sidney in varsity doubleheader

     STANTON — Both the Stanton baseball and softball teams started the conference portion of their season strong with wins Friday night at Anderson Park.

    The highlight win came courtesy of the baseball team as they scored a 9-2 victory over the Cowboys in the second game of the varsity doubleheader.

    The game was delayed nearly an hour in the bottom of the sixth because of lightning in the area.

  • Golf Recap: Griswold finishes sixth at state

     MARSHALLTOWN — The Griswold boys’ golf team finished sixth during the state meet over the weekend.

    Griswold posted a two-day team score of 663, which kept them out of the top five by six strokes.

    Bishop Garrigan won the state title with a score of 604. East Buchanan took second and New London finished third.

  • Red Oak drops baseball opener to Kuemper

     CARROLL — The Red Oak baseball team lost its first and only game for the week, 7-0, to Kuemper Catholic Friday night in Carroll.

    The game was supposed to be part of a varsity doubleheader, however, they played one game and the second one was rained out.

    Red Oak was held hitless in the game as Kuemper Catholic jumped out to a lead early on and stayed ahead.

  • SWV baseball scores first win of season

     The Southwest Valley baseball team is off to a 1-2 start for the 2015 season. 

    Their lone win came during the I-35 tournament Saturday when they defeated East Union 6-5. Southwest Valley scored four runs in the seventh inning to get the win. Cody McMann drove in the game-winning run.
