  • Fremont-Mills shuts down Vikings

     STANTON — The Fremont-Mills football team took the lead in the 8-man District 8 standings Friday night when they defeated the Stanton Vikings 51-6 in a battle of undefeated district teams.

    The Knights scored 44 of their 51 points in the first half forcing a running clock late in the first half and continuing it through the entirety of the second.

  • Tigers harriers second at Clarinda invite

     CLARINDA — The Red Oak cross country teams finished runner-up in both varsity races last Monday at Clarinda High School.

    In both instances, it was a four-team field for the varsity.

    The girls varsity team finished with a score of 45, 14 behind the winner of the race, Shenandoah.

  • Williams manages fight against breast cancer

     Donna Williams has taken on numerous challenges and faced many foes throughout her long coaching career in Villisca. Last year, Williams met her toughest opponent yet.

    Williams was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in her right breast last fall. As frightening as the diagnosis was, like any good coach, she instantly went into game planning mode.

  • Tigers get Denison win and claim Tri-Center title

     Following a loss last Tuesday to Harlan, the Red Oak volleyball team got back on track later in the week with a conference win against Denison-Schleswig Thursday night and cruising to a title at the Tri-Center tournament Saturday in Neola.

    The conference win came during Pink Out Night when they defeated Denison-Schleswig 3-0.

  • Friday Football: Red Oak squares off against Treynor on Homecoming

    It's Homecoming in Red Oak and the Tigers look to snap a two-game losing skid.

    Red Oak (2-3 overall, 1-2 district) will try to snap that skid against a Treynor (0-5, 0-3) team in search of a win.

    The losing skid extends to part of last season for the Cardinals as they've lost seven straight and nine of 10. Treynor's last win came Oct. 18, 2013 against Missouri Valley.

  • Friday Football: Stanton/FM showdown top match-up in 8-man

    The 8-man District 8 champion won't be determined Friday night. However, the winner of the Stanton/Fremont-Mills game will have a clear path to the district title.

    Both teams are 3-0 in the District 8 standings. The Vikings are 3-0 in district play for the first time since the 2010 season. 

    Stanton scored 78 points in a win last week against the Essex Trojans. During their three-game winning streak, the Vikings have scored 214 points, or 71.3 per game.

  • Friday Football: Class A and 1A Week 6 Preview

    Week six of the high school football season has arrived. Here's a preview of the games in Class A and 1A.

    Class A

    The Griswold football team will be back on the road when they head to Council Bluffs to face St. Albert.

    Griswold is 2-3 for the season. They lost last week to Westwood, 24-7.

    St. Albert meanwhile has lost two of three and are 1-2 in the district, along with Griswold.

    Both teams need a win if they want to hang in the district playoff race. Both teams sit tied for fifth, outside the top four.

  • IGHSAU Volleyball Rankings: Red Oak remains fifth in 3A

    NOTE: The post has been updated to reflect changes in the 4A poll. There was a change in the rankings in 4A.

    The IGHSAU released the sixth volleyball rankings Thursday for all five classes.

    The Red Oak Tigers remain fifth in the Class 3A rankings, one of three Hawkeye 10 teams in the 3A poll.

    Red Oak sits behind Independence, who dropped to fourth this week after they were third the previous week.

    Solon, Mount Vernon and Nevada occupy the top three spots in the 3A rankings.

  • UPDATED: Sports Calendar: October 2

    UPDATE: The Shenandoah Cross Country meet has been postponed because of inclement weather. The meet will now take place Monday at 4 p.m.

    It's a busy day on the fall sports calendar around the area.

    In volleyball, it's back to work for Red Oak. They play host to Denison-Schleswig as it will be Pink Out Night. The varsity match is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start, or shortly after the conclusion of the 9th/JV match.

    Red Oak is recovering from a 3-0 loss to the top-ranked Harlan Cyclones Tuesday night.

  • 2014 Corner Conference Volleyball Tournament brackets released

    The bracket for the 2014 Corner Conference Volleyball Tournament was released Wednesday.

    Stanton, Essex and East Mills will all start the tournament Monday in the quarterfinals.

    The Viqueens, who are seeded No. 2 will be home as they host South Page No. 7. The match itself will be a JV/varsity doubleheader startin at 6 p.m., with varsity to follow.

    Essex (No. 6 seed) meanwhile will travel to Malvern to face East Mills (No. 3 seed). The varsity match is expected to start at 7:30 p.m., as the 9/10/JV matches will take place beforehand.
