  • Stanton knocked off by Bedford in districts

     LENOX — Two-out runs can really hurt a team.

    It did a number on the Stanton Vikings when they gave up seven of them, including six in the second inning, as they lost their 1A district quarterfinal game last Tuesday 11-1 in five innings to the Bedford Bulldogs at Lenox High School.

    The six-run second inning came at a time when Stanton (9-9) was tied 1-1 with the Bulldogs and were one out away from getting out of the inning.

  • East Mills eliminated by Tri-Center

     COUNCIL BLUFFS — After taking the lead early, the East Mills Wolverines fell short of knocking off Tri-Center when they lost 4-2 last Tuesday in the 1A district quarterfinals at St. Albert High School.

    East Mills got on the board early with a run to take a 1-0 lead.

  • Griswold falls to St. Albert

     COUNCIL BLUFFS — The Griswold baseball season came to an end last Tuesday in Council Bluffs when they lost 13-3 in five innings to St. Albert to start the 1A district tournament.

    The Falcons jumped out to an 8-0 lead early in the game, thanks to two runs in the first and six in the second.

    Griswold (7-17) cut into the lead with two runs in the top of the third inning, but St. Albert quickly got those two runs back.

  • Essex/Griswold players picked for IGCA all-district softball team

    DES MOINES — One Essex and two Griswold softball players were picked for the Class 1A Southwest All-District softball team released by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

    Essex’s Sara Skalberg and Griswold’s Marlia Rossell and Kinzey Nicklaus were chosen. 

    The three, all seniors, were the only ones picked in the area.

  • SWV falls in opening district round to West Central Valley

     STUART — The postseason ended early for Southwest Valley after their opening round district baseball loss to West Central Valley Saturday night.

    West Central Valley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Timberwolves (6-21) responded with three in the second to take a 3-2 lead.

  • Sports Calendar: District Baseball Quarterfinal Preview

    Three teams remain in the district baseball tournament. All three are in Class 1A, but in different districts. The quarterfinals get going Tuesday, so here's a look at all the teams in the area.

    Class 1A District 14

    The lone area team in this district is the Stanton Vikings. They begin their postseason Tuesday evening when they go to Lenox to take on the Bedford Bulldogs. 

  • Viqueens postseason run ends against LoMa

     LOGAN — The Stanton Viqueens knew the challenges that faced them in the regional softball tournament last week.

    They were a team that finished fourth in the Corner Conference with a 5-5 record and weren’t seeded well for the postseason.

    With the uphill battles that Stanton faced, they focused on one thing.

    “Our motto has been just have fun,” Stanton softball co-coach Lacey Stephens said.

  • Griswold falls short against Glidden-Ralston

     GLIDDEN —The Griswold softball team was eliminated from the 1A regional softball tournament after their loss 9-3 in Glidden last Wednesday to Glidden-Ralston.

    Griswold (21-16) fell behind early in the game when Glidden-Ralston scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Tigers kept close by scoring a run in the third to cut the lead to 2-1.
