  • Trojans baseball scores first win of season

     ESSEX — In their last regular season game, the Essex Trojans baseball team scored its first win of the season when they defeated Clarinda Academy 17-5 Thursday in Essex.

    The Trojans (1-19) trailed 5-2 through 1 1/2 innings, but scored three in the bottom of the second and eight more in the third to take a commanding lead.

    Essex scored two runs each in the fourth and fifth inning to get the win via the mercy rule.

  • Red Oak softball season ends with regional loss to Shenandoah

     SHENANDOAH — Keep building. That is what Red Oak softball coach Tristin Johnson wants to do.

    “I’ve been happy with the young group. They’ve definitely out-performed some of the stuff that we thought they could,” Johnson said. “Now we need to get our mind-set where we’re not happy with just competing in games. We want to go out and want to win games.”

  • T’Wolves fall to Nodaway Valley

     GREENFIELD — The Southwest Valley softball season ended last Wednesday when they lost 10-0 in five innings to Nodaway Valley in the quarterfinals of the 2A regional tournament.

    The difference in the game was the second inning when Nodaway Valley scored seven runs to take an 8-0 lead. 

    The Wolverines scored a run in the third and fifth inning to put the game away.

  • Vikings enter baseball districts with two straight victories

    STANTON — It’s always good to go into the postseason with a little momentum. That’s precisely what the Stanton Vikings did last week when they scored two wins to close out the baseball regular season.

    The most recent win came last Wednesday at home when they defeated Adair-Casey 6-2.

    Stanton (9-8) jumped out ahead early thanks to two runs in the first and one in the second to take a 3-0 lead.

  • Trojanettes stunned by Stanton in regionals

    SIDNEY —The Essex Trojanettes were denied a third straight regional semifinal trip when they lost 14-13 to Stanton in the 1A quarterfinals last Wednesday at Sidney High School.

    Both teams stayed close throughout the game. Essex took a 2-1 lead after one inning and continued to lead 4-3 after three innings.

    Stanton scored five runs in the top of the fourth to take an 8-4 lead. However, the Trojanettes responded with six in the bottom half of the inning to make it 10-8.

  • Tigers eliminated by Clarinda in baseball districts

     AVOCA — The Red Oak baseball season ended Saturday evening in Avoca when the Tigers lost 9-5 to the Clarinda Cardinals in the opening round of the 2A district baseball tournament.

    Red Oak (5-20) found themselves trailing early on when they gave up five runs in the bottom of the second and one more in the third to fall behind 8-2.

  • Sports Calendar: July 10 weekend

    It's a busy weekend on the sports calendar as the postseason continues on.

    We start with Friday as one area team remains standing in softball regionals.

    That team is the Stanton Viqueens, who are making a semifinal appearance for the first time since 2012. The Viqueens face a tough foe in seventh-ranked Logan-Magnolia. The game starts at 7 p.m. in Logan.

    The Viqueens reached the semifinals thanks to their 9-2 first round win over Sidney on Monday and followed it up Wednesday with a 14-13 upset victory over Essex.

  • Sports Calendar: July 8 plus Regional Softball Quarterfinals

    There's no rest for the weary at this point of the summer sports season. It all continues on with plenty more action for Wednesday.

    Before starting the regional softball preview, there are a few baseball games on the calendar for Wednesday.

    The Red Oak baseball team makes up a JV/varsity doubleheader when they host Creston. JV will be playing first at 5:30 p.m.

    The Stanton baseball team will also be home when they host Adair-Casey in a JV/varsity doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m.

  • Sports Calendar: July 7

    We have a lot to make up for on Tuesday. Several games that were postponed Monday will be played today, including a couple of regional softball games.

    Both Griswold and Southwest Valley have to play their first round regional softball games Tuesday evening.

    Griswold will be home as they host CAM in the first round. The winner of the game will take on Glidden-Ralston Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Glidden.

    The only other 1A-Region 7 game that needs to be played features Bedford at Lenox. The winner of that game will play Exira-EHK Wednesday evening.

  • Stanton falls short against area teams

     STANTON — Both the Stanton baseball and softball teams fell short against AHSTW Thursday night at different locations.

    The baseball team was home as they lost 13-6 to the other Vikings team.

    Stanton (7-8) fell behind early, but got right back into it in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a two-RBI double off the fence in the third inning by catcher Jacob Lindgren.
