Stanton driver ejected from truck after hitting parked cars, utility pole

In the early morning hours last Saturday, residents of the 200 block of south Eighth Street were woke up by a police and Red Oak rescue lights.

“I was up watching TV in bed when the power just went out,” resident Jeff Herman explained. “I didn’t even hear the car wreck outside and it wasn’t until probably ten minutes after the power went out that we realized why.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s office reported that Kale Wenberg of Stanton was traveling southbound on south Eighth Street at a rapid speed, lost control of his 1995 Dodge 1500 pick-up and struck a parked car, pushing it into a parked van, which struck the pick-up truck that was parked behind it.

“He kept coming up the road, but with only three tires,” Herman recalls. “That’s when he rode over the curb into the yard.”

Wenberg’s vehicle rolled three times before striking a utility pole in Herman’s yard.

The pick-up snapped the pole, downing power lines, and rested on it’s top.

Wenberg was found 35 feet from the wreckage and was taken to the Montgomery County Hospital, in Red Oak, where he was flown by Life Net to the trauma center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

Charges are still pending until Wenberg’s release from the hospital.

The total damages from the wreck are estimated over $20,000.

“It’s not uncommon to see cars coming through here at 50 to 60 miles per hour,” Herman said. “It’s pretty dangerous. I wish they’d slow down.”
