The Top 10 Sports Stories of 2015 Year in Review

They were not picked to be the favorites to win the conference and they made sure to prove everyone wrong.
With the rally cry of “Less than zero,” the Essex Trojanettes marched forward and won the Corner Conference softball championship over the summer. The clinching victory came in a 13-0 win in three innings over East Mills June 26 in Essex.
While the win against East Mills made it official, it was the doubleheader sweeps versus Stanton and Fremont-Mills earlier in the week that helped put them in the lead.
Essex started the week June 22 with a doubleheader sweep over Stanton, winning 21-6 and 15-4. The next night, they swept Fremont-Mills 10-8 and 16-10, putting them ahead in the conference standings.
The sweep over Fremont-Mills gave Essex a one-game lead heading into the final conference games. Essex finished the conference season with a 9-1 record. Their lone conference loss came June 7 against Sidney.
Offense played a big role in Essex’s season. Led by senior stars Sara Skalberg, Amber Ohnmacht and Kym Graham, the Trojanettes easily led the Corner Conference in all its batting categories. Their team slugging percentage of .523 was the third best in Class 1A. Five Trojanettes (Skalberg, Daiton Martin, Ausha Gay, Bethany Johnson and Jescenia Mosley) were picked for first team all-conference.
Essex’s season came to an end July 8 with a loss in the regional quarterfinals to Stanton.
