Tree removal bid goes to Miners Tree Service

The Red Oak City Council is moving forward with a bid for tree removal services. 

At the regular meeting on Dec. 16, city administrator Brad Wright said after reviewing other contracts, he had drafted a contract between the City of Red Oak and Miners Tree Service. 

“The contract spells out exact stipulations, and gives us an opportunity to default if they are not doing things the way they need to be done,” said Wright. 

Since the past meeting, Wright said he had received Miners insurance certificates for liability and workman’s comp. The certificates were not in the possession of the council when the bids were reviewed at the prior meeting. Wright said Miners was the right choice financially. 

“We have 135 trees, between this and the next bid is about a $15,000 difference. It seems this is enough of a financial difference to give them a shot. My recommendation is to award the bid to Miners,” commented Wright. 

The council approved the awarding of the bid to Miners Tree Service. 

The council also discussed a request from the owners of the Rainbow CafО’ for a handicapped parking spot in front of the restaurant. Wright said that based on city code, the parking spot could be approved by the council, and did not require an ordinance. 

Red Oak Mayor Bill Billings said the request was initiated by one of the serving staff from the restaurant. 

“She made the request out of care and concern for a number of patrons using walkers and coming in and out of the building. It’s very difficult when people park in front of the access they have at the front of the restaurant,” Billings said. 

Red Oak Police Chief Justin Rhamy said the parking spot would be a parallel spot. The council approved the request for a handicapped parking space. 

In other business, the council: 

• Approved a contract for engineering services with Snyder & Associates, Inc. for the Red Oak Municipal Airport taxiway and apron pavement rehabilitation project, per the Airport Commission’s recommendation.

• Approved the renewal of a Class C liquor license with Sunday sales and outdoor service for the Red Coach Inn.

• Approved the renewal of a Class C liquor license for LaCascada.

• Approved airport hangar lease agreements, per the Airport Commission’s recommendation for: Jerry McDonald, Tim Saddler, Chad Hill, Red Oak Hawks, LLC., and Joe Vinton.

Wright advised the council he was working to get an update from JEO Consulting on the levee recertification project.
