Melissa Hummel, Red Oak, driving a 2001 Dodge Durango, was northbound on 1st Street and had entered the intersection. Hummel applied her brakes when she saw Penry’s vehicle approaching. Penry swerved to avoid Hummel’s vehicle but struck it, then went over a curb and struck a tree, continued through the yard and back into the street. Damage to Hummel’s vehicle was estimated at $1,500 and damage to Penry’s vehicle at $5,000. Penry was cited for failure to yield in an uncontrolled intersection and also for no insurance.
  • On March 3, Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies investigated a one-vehicle accident that occurred about 8:11 a.m. on 150th Street west of Stennett. Margene Bisbee, Carson, driving a 2004 Ford Expedition, lost control on the ice-covered road and slid into the ditch. The vehicle skidded sideways and then rolled, coming to rest on its wheels. Bisbee was transported to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital for treatment. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $7,500 and no citations were issued.
  • On March 4, Red Oak police officers received a report of a hit and run accident in the 1100 block of E. Corning St. Sometime between the hours of 10 p.m. March 3 and 8 a.m. March 4 an unknown vehicle struck a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT owned by Logan Currin, causing about $1,600 damage.

Johnson was treated at the scene and transported by medical helicopter to Nebraska Medical Center. The other occupant of the vehicle, Havyn Johnson, 4, was transported to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital by Villisca Recue for treatment of his injuries. Neither occupant of the vehicle was using restraints at the time of the accident. It is unclear if the driver had a medical issue that may have contributed to the accident. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s office was assisted by personnel from the Iowa State Patrol, Villisca Fire and Rescue, Red Oak Rescue and Grant Fire.
