3A Regional Girls Basketball Preview: Quarterfinals action

The 3A regional field takes to the basketball floor Saturday night for quarterfinals action.

The Red Oak girls basketball team will be home Saturday night as they open regionals with a match-up against Clarinda.

The Tigers have won three in a row and four of their last five games heading into the clash with Clarinda. The Cardinals meanwhile enter the game having lost three straight.

Red Oak and Clarinda split meetings during the regular season. Clarinda won the first game 47-43, while Red Oak won the second game 54-41.

The player to watch for Red Oak will be Blake Bergren. The junior forward has stepped up during Red Oak's three game winning streak. In the team's most recent win Tuesday night at Audubon, Bergren scored a season high 20 points.

Jenny Bair is the player to watch for Clarinda. Bair leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.1 points per game.

The winner of Red Oak-Clarinda plays the winner of Atlantic-Shenandoah Wednesday night in Shenandoah.

Both Atlantic and Shenandoah have had their struggles all season. It has been rougher for the Fillies as they're currently in the midst of a seven-game losing skid. Shenandoah's last win was Jan. 11 against Denison-Schleswig.

The Trojanns meanwhile have lost three straight and seven of eight. The two teams have met once this season, with Shenandoah winning Dec. 14 47-34.

In the bottom half of the bracket, the quarterfinal games will be Saydel against ADM and I-35 versus North Polk.

North Polk has lost three games this season. Their most recent loss was 47-44 to PCM-Monroe Jan. 29. I-35 meanwhile had a five-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night at home against Martensdale-St. Marys.

ADM enters regionals having won two of its last three games. Saydel meanwhile has lost four of five.

All regional games start at 7 p.m.
