INCIDENTS

• On Sept. 27, at about 5:53 p.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office received information that someone took items, which included solar lights and other decorations, from two graves in the Elliott Cemetery in the past two weeks. Anyone with information should contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office.

ACCIDENTS

• On Sept. 22, at about 11:10 a.m., Red Oak Police officers investigated an accident at the intersection of North 2nd and Valley Streets. Alice Walters, 26, Shenandoah, driving a 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue owned by Christopher Walters, Shenandoah, was traveling west on East Valley Street and was approaching the intersection with North 2nd Street. Natacia Houston, 21, Red Oak, driving a 2009 Pontiac G6, traveling north on North 2nd Street, failed to yield at the uncontrolled intersection and struck the Walters vehicle. Juanita Kalkas, 51, Shenandoah, a passenger in the Walters vehicle, was transported to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital for evaluation of a hand injury. Damage to the Walters vehicle was about $5,000, and damage to the Houston vehicle was estimated at $3,000. No citations were issued at the time of the accident.
• On Sept. 24, at about 4:11 p.m., a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy investigated an accident on U.S. Highway 71 at the intersection with High Street in Villisca. Ann Lind, 20, Iowa City, driving a 2004 Mini Cooper, was traveling south on Highway 71 and approaching traffic that had slowed for a vehicle turning east onto High Street. Lind saw a 2011 Kenworth semi owned by Randy’s of Carroll and operated by Christopher Selby, 53, Queen Creek, Ariz., approaching from the rear and pulled over onto the shoulder to avoid being hit. Selby had not noticed that traffic was stopping and also tried to pull over onto the shoulder, where he struck Lind’s vehicle. Lind had a minor cut to her foot and complained of neck pain; she was transported to Clarinda Regional Hospital by Villisca Rescue. Selby was treated at the scene by Villisca Rescue personnel for a minor cut to his hand sustained while trying to help Lind out of our vehicle. Lind’s vehicle was believed to be a total loss with about $8,000 in damage, while damage to the Kenworth was estimated at $800. Selby was cited for following too closely.
  
• On Sept. 25, at about 12:54 p.m., Red Oak Police officers investigated an accident at the intersection of Eastern Avenue and Highway 34. Dillion Terry, 21, Red Oak, driving a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe, was traveling east on Highway 34. Bruce Burr, 86, Red Oak, driving a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer owned by Guila Burr, Red Oak, was northbound on Eastern Avenue. Burr, who misjudged the distance to the oncoming Terry vehicle, began to cross the highway. Terry attempted to swerve but was unable to avoid hitting a metal luggage-type carrier attached to the receiver hitch of Burr’s vehicle. Damage to Terry’s vehicle is estimated at $3,500, while Burr’s vehicle had about $2,000 damage. Burr was cited for failure to yield upon entering a through highway.
  
• On Sept. 27, a about 7:30 p.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office investigated a single-vehicle accident at 180th Street and J Avenue northeast of Red Oak. Tannah Halvin, 16, Red Oak, driving a 2013 Chevy Cruze, was traveling west on 180th Street when a Red Dodge extended-cab truck with silver accents around the tail lights, which was approaching the intersection from the south, turn west onto 180th Street and passed the Halvin vehicle. Halvin’s vehicle entered the ditch, causing a personal-injury accident, and the truck left the scene of the accident. Damage to Halvin’s vehicle is about $3,000. Anyone with information about this accident should call the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office at 623-5107.
