Authorities searching for fugitive

Montgomery County authorities are on the lookout for a fugitive.

At around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, Red Oak Police and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office were notified of a vehicle pursuit which had begun in Adams County. Adams County authorities reported a vehicle had passed a traffic stop at around 85 mph three miles east of the Adams/Montgomery County line. The Adams County deputy activated his lights and siren but the driver refused to stop.

Upon entering Montgomery County, the pursuit continued westbound on Highway 34 at speeds of 110 mph. Upon entering the city limits, the driver struck a deer at the intersection of Highway 34 and Eastern Ave. The vehicle entered the ditch and returned to the roadway. The suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, while the vehicle came to rest roughly 150 yards southwest of the Highway 34/Eastern Ave. intersection.

Authorities began a search for the subject with the use of K9s from Montgomery and Cass Counties, but were unable to locate the suspect.

Later that morning, at around 8 a.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office received a report of a stolen cell phone at 2067 200th Street. Authorities conducted another search at that location but were unsuccessful in locating the suspect. Authorities did confirm the stolen cell phone was used by the suspect to contact an ex-girlfriend in the Des Moines area.

Authorities are looking for Nicholas Allen Cannon, 30, of Des Moines. He’s a white male, 5’11”, 185 pounds, with blue eyes, and a shaved head with stubble hair growth. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and shorts.

Allen should be considered armed and dangerous. If you see anyone matching his description, contact law enforcement ad advise them of his whereabouts and any other pertinent information.
