Betty J. Riepe, 79

Betty J. Riepe, 79, died Oct. 2, 2009, at the Red Oak Rehabilitation Center in Red Oak.

Betty Jane (Sunderman) Riepe was born just south of Atlantic on Dec. 7, 1929, to Maria Christina Schaaf and Werner Sunderman. Betty, graduated form Griswold High School in 1948. After graduation Betty taught country school for five years.

She married Lawrence Edward Riepe May 14, 1949, at the Little Brown Church and they owned and operated “Riepe’s Recreation,” a short-order café and pool hall.

A long-time member of the Griswold Rebekah Lodge, Betty was a Past Noble Grand. She was a member of the Lewis United Congregational-Methodist Church. Preceding Betty in death were her husband, her parents, her brothers, Vernon Dewayne, Bobby Wayne and Werner Jr.; her sisters, Francis I. Sunderman, Marjorie Pickinpaugh and Agnes Osen.

Surviving Betty are her daughters, Janie (Rod) Montang of Exira, Christie (David) Wallace of Griswold, Debra (Curt) Copple of Scottsbluff, Neb. and Rebecca (Jon) Mosier Lewis; son Bradley Riepe of Griswold; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister Maxine Houser; sister-in-laws, Della Smith of Griswold and Margaret Sunderman of Avoca; and brother-in-law Dean Osen of Guthrie.

Brooks Funeral Care is in charge of cremation. Family members will meet with friends and family during visitation from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on Oct. 8 at the United Congregational-Methodist Church at 401 First Street in Lewis.

A memorial service begins at 3:30 p.m. A luncheon will follow.
