Blue Jays fifth at Red Oak, second at Clarinda
RED OAK—The Villisca Blue Jays girls track and field team finished fifth at the Lady Tiger Relays, held at Red Oak High School Thursday.
The Blue Jays finished with a score of 57 points, out of seven teams competing at the meet. Griswold won the Class A meet.
Morganne Haer had the highlight of the meet for Villisca as she picked up her first win of the season in the long jump event. Haer jumped 15’4” to finish ahead of Stanton’s Paige Peterson. Haer also had a third place finish in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 1:06.20. Haer finished behind the Griswold pair of Larissa Backhaus and Justine Freund.
Amanda Focht finished third in the shot put with a throw of 30’5.25”. Focht also had a sixth place finish in the discus throw. Jill Vanderhoof finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 85’10”.
The Blue Jays best relay finish was in the sprint medley when the team of Haer, Jenny King, Mikayla Dolch and Kelsey Means were second with a time of 2:05.73. They were nearly six seconds behind Corning.
Last Tuesday, Villisca finished third at the Lady Cardinal Relays, held at Clarinda High School. The Blue Jays finished with a score of 72 points.
Villisca picked up two individual wins at the meet. Lilly Berggren won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.92 seconds, .04 ahead of Stanton's Carmen Subbert. Amanda Focht picked up the other win for Villisca in the shot put, winning with a throw of 31’6.5”, one foot farther than Corning's Carley Pappas.
The Blue Jays had other top finishers at the meet. Morganne Haer was an inch shy of first place in the long jump. Haer had a jump of 16’2”, while Bedford's Kayla Lindenmeyer had a jump of 16’3”. Sheri Schaaf also finished second, doing so in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.65 seconds. Schaaf edged out Griswold's Larissa Backhaus and East Mills' Kendra Croghan to claim second place.
In the relay events, Villisca had a second place finish in the 4x100's with a time of 53.78 seconds, less than a second behind Corning. Their other second place finish was in the distance medley, with a time of 4:41.68. Villisca's distance medley team was six seconds behind the winners of the event, St. Albert.
They also finished third in the sprint medley, fourth in the 4x400 and fifth in the 4x200.
