Blue Jays score lone win at Griswold Tournament Saturday

GRISWOLD — The Villisca Blue Jays softball team picked up a win during the Griswold Tournament in Griswold Saturday.

Villisca defeated Exira-EHK, 4-0, in their only game at the Griswold Tournament.

The Blue Jays took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back, tacking on runs in the fifth and sixth.

The Blue Jays were able to score the runs with two hits. Sheri Schaaf and Abbey Wallingford each were credited with the hit for the Blue Jays. Schaaf scored a run and had a stolen base.

Morganne Haer, Jill Vanderhoof and Tiffany Gibbons also scored runs in the Villisca win.

Lexi Bronner got the win for Villisca as she pitched a complete game shutout. Bronner gave up just three hits and struck out eight batters.

Inclement weather kept the remaining games from being played.
Villisca was able to get a game in Thursday night as they lost to the Essex Trojanettes 11-1, after five innings.

Essex scored four runs in the first inning and scored another seven during the next three innings.

Vanderhoof scored the lone run of the game as she was 1-for-2 with a double.

Other players with hits were Haer, Wallingford, Kim Hults and Kelsey Means.

Villisca was scheduled to play East Mills Friday night, but the game was postponed.

Last Wednesday, Villisca split a triangular against East Mills and Essex. They defeated East Mills 11-2 and lost to Essex 8-5.

In the win against East Mills, the Blue Jays jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings when they scored four more runs in the fourth to take a commanding lead.

East Mills scored a run in the fifth to keep the game from ending based on the 10-run rule.

The Blue Jays had four hits in the game, but were walked 10 times.
Heather Means scored three runs for the Blue Jays. Schaaf and Haer each scored two runs in the win.

In the loss to Essex, the Blue Jays fell behind 6-0 and played catch up from there. Haer was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Vanderhoof and Schaaf also recorded two hits each.

Last Tuesday, Villisca lost to the Nishabotna Blue Devils, 7-3. The Blue Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Villisca jumped on the board in the second, thanks to a bunt RBI single by Currin, scoring Kim Hults.

The score was 2-1 until the fourth inning when Nishnabotna scored three runs to make the score 5-1. They added an additional two runs in the fifth to make the score 7-1.

Villisca would score runs in the sixth and seventh inning, but they wouldn't be enough. The Blue Jays had the bases loaded in the sixth inning.

Currin and Focht each had two hits in the game. Focht was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Blue Jays were home Monday to play Bedford, but results weren't available as of press time.

Tuesday night, they head to Tabor to play Fremont-Mills, looking to avenge their June 7 loss to the Knights.

Friday night, they'll be at Sidney looking to complete the regular season series sweep. They defeated the Cowgirls 11-2 on June 1.
