Bluejays win one of four to begin season

The Villisca Bluejays baseball team started out the 2013 season winning one of their first four games.

The lone win of the week came last Thursday at home against Adair-Casey when they won 15-11. After trailing 3-0 early in the game, Villisca responded in the bottom half of the first by scoring eight runs to take an 8-3 lead.

Adair-Casey rallied in the second and fourth inning, scoring four runs each instance, to take an 11-8 lead.

The Bluejays got the last laugh by scoring five runs in the fifth. They put the cherry on top with an additional two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Last Wednesday, Villisca was on the road when they lost 15-1 to Orient-Macksburg.

Orient Macksburg exploded out of the gate by scoring five runs in the first inning and six more in the third inning to take an 11-1 lead. Villisca scored its lone run in the third inning. Orient-Macksburg put the game on ice by scoring four runs in the fourth inning, which allowed them to win by the 10-run mercy rule.

Villisca opened the season at home last Monday when they lost 20-5 to Mount Ayr in five innings. After both teams scored two runs in the first inning, Villisca scored three more in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Mount Ayr rallied though as they were walked 12 times in the game and scored six runs in the third inning, seven in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Villisca’s most recent game was last Friday with a 4-3 loss to Essex/South Page.

The Bluejays were home Tuesday night to host the Stanton Vikings. Results weren’t available as of press time.

Friday night, Villisca hits the road to take on the Sidney Cowboys.
