Boys track teams compete at Cardinal Invitational
Tuesday night the girls Cardinal Invitational was delayed due to lightning and thunder. Although the weather was windy and cold Friday for the boys Cardinal Invitational the lightning stayed away and the meet was competed.
Red Oak, Stanton, Southwest Valley, Griswold and East Mills were in Clarinda for the meet, and there were solid results from all four schools.
Red Oak
Despite the fact that Red Oak is usually classified as a 2A school, it raced with the 3A schools in Clarinda and still achieved some good results.
Head coach Sueann French said the Tigers have some things to sort out but this was a good measuring stick for the rest of the season.
“We’ve got some things to work on. We have a lot of freshmen,” she said. “I tell the kids that they’re only going to get better and stronger. This is all helping them.”
Red Oak ran Hayden VanMeter in the open 100 meter dash for the first time, and French said she was happy with his performance considering it was his first time running in the event, placing sixth with a time of 12.47.
Dylan Graber finished ninth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.99, and then took sixth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.27.
Clay Selberg scored for Red Oak in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:14.24, which was good for fifth.
The 4x100 meter relay team placed fifth with a time of 47.67.
Stanton
The big performance for Stanton came in the field, not on the track. Alex Becthold won both the shot put and the discus, winning the discus with a throw of 147’10’’ and the shot put with a throw of 46’.
“He’s very diligent in his warm-up,” head coach Jeff Grebin said. “I hope other kids learn from that. His leadership is something we’re going to miss next year so we’re going to get as much out of him as we can this year.”
Stanton also saw a first place performance from its shuttle hurdle team who finished with a time of 1:10.10.
Other strong performances came from Drake Johnson, who finished third in the long jump with a jump of 18’3’’; Connor Hultman who took third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.41; and Chris Jones who finished third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.69.
Southwest Valley
The Timberwolves saw a winning performance from Tony Klocke, who won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.96.
The 4x100 meter shuttle hurdle relay team also scored for Southwest Valley by finishing third with a time of 1:08.53.
Wyatt McAlpin had a good day, finishing fifth in the 400 meter dash, seventh in the 200 meter dash and eighth in the 800 meter run.
