Claude A. Everhart, 90

Claude A. Everhart, 90, died July 21, 2009.

Claude Attucks Everhart was born March 20, 1919 and raised in Red Oak. He was named in honor of the first African American martyr of America’s Revolutionary War, Crispus Attucks.

Claude completed high school in Red Oak in 1936 and graduated from the Red Oak junior college in 1938. He went to work for the Quincy Barge Company in Quincy, Ill. During his tenure there, the crew built 300 landing crafts for World War II tank barges in less than 10 months.

In Jan. 1966, Claude was recruited to help dropout youth return to school and learn a trade in Oakland’s MDTA program.

Claude and his wife Zenobia of more than 50 years were proud parents of two sons and five grandchildren.

Zenobia preceded him in death on July 31, 2008.

Funeral services were held July 28 at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church in San Francisco, Calif.

The Bryant Mortuary in San Francisco, Calif. are in charge of arrangements.
