Cooking contest winners

Finalists in the Iowa Egg Council’s 25th Annual Cooking Contest whipped, sauteed, baked, and fried their way into the heated cooking competition held on March 20 at the Des Moines Botanical Center.

The final 10 recipes were selected from more than 200 original egg recipes submitted in the 2010 contest. 

“The finalists were chosen based on originality and the use of eggs in the recipe,” said Cayla Westergard, Iowa Egg Council Director of Consumer Affairs. “From soufflés and quiches to a twist on scrambled eggs, the finalist recipes were creative, delectable, and eye-catching.”

The finalists prepared their dishes at the March 20 cook-off in front of a panel of food and nutrition judges.

The recipes were evaluated on taste appeal, appearance, originality, ingredient/nutritional content, and use of eggs.

More than 500 spectators attended the contest. 

The adult finalists include: 1st place “Fiesta Egg Party Dip” by Tina Perdue of Griswold, 2nd place “Pear Feather Pillow” by Judy Smith of Des Moines, 3rd place “Asparagus Crab Quiche” by Mary Paardekooper Moore of Afton, 4th place “Confetti Breakfast Pizza” by Cheryl Rogers of Ames, and 5th place “Teriyolky Sunrise” by Trevyn Rupp of Maquoketa. 

Adult and student finalists received monetary and culinary prizes sponsored by the Iowa Egg Council.
