Corner Conference Semifinal Girls Basketball Preview

The semifinals for the Corner Conference girls' basketball tournament will take place Wednesday night at Villisca High School. Here's a look at the two semifinal games that will take place for that time.

No. 2 (East) Stanton vs. No. 1 (West) Fremont-Mills- 6:15 p.m.

Both teams enter Wednesday night's game on a bit of a roll. Stanton has won eight straight games, all by at least double-digit points.

The Viqueens won Monday night against East Mills, 57-29, to reach this point.

Fremont-Mills has recovered from a five game losing streak by winning their last three games, including Monday night against Clarinda Academy.

The two teams played each other Jan. 6 in Tabor, with the Viqueens winning 56-38. Corner Conference leading scorer Macy Williams scored eight points in that loss to Stanton.

Stanton will have to contend with Williams, a freshman. Williams has averaged 20.6 points per game during the Knights three game winning streak.

One player to watch out for with Stanton will be forward Kara Allen.  The junior has scored at least 10 points in six straight games.

Monday night against East Mills, Allen had a double-double by scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds (seven offensive).

No. 1 (East) Villisca vs. No. 2 (West) Nishnabotna- 7:30 p.m.

With the exception of their hiccup against Bedford, Villisca has won all of their games thus far this season.

The Blue Jays picked up a big win Monday night over Sidney, 50-29, to reach the semifinals. Morganne Haer, Mikayla Dolch and Amanda Focht all scored at least 10 points for Villisca. Haer led the way with 14 points.

For the Blue Devils, they held off a second half rally by the Trojanettes to beat Essex, 49-41. Molly Goltz scored 19 points to lead Nishnabotna.

The Blue Jays have a win over Nishnabotna already this season. Villisca won 38-33 on Dec. 16.

Goltz indeed will be one of the players to watch for Nishnabotna. The junior scored 13 points off the bench for Nishnabotna in their earlier loss to Villisca.

Focht and Jill Vanderhoof will be the players to watch for Villisca. Both are averaging 13 points per game
