Elizabeth M. Schmid, 86

Elizabeth M. Schmid, 86, of Red Oak, died Aug. 19, 2009, at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital.

Elizabeth Mary Schmid was born July 3, 1923, in Red Oak the daughter of Gottfried and Mathilda (Sohm) Schmid. She graduated from Red Oak High School in 1942 and took her nurse’s training at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. Liz received her Registered Nurse status and went to Boston, Mass. with the WAAC Army Program and studied to become a surgical nurse. She then started her career at Murphy Memorial Hospital where she was a Registered Nurse, Surgical Nurse, Director of Nurses, and an assistant at the Doctors’ clinics. She retired after 54 years of service from Montgomery County Memorial Hospital.

Liz was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her brother, George (Lois) Schmid of Red Oak; nephews and nieces: Dennis (Kay) Schmid of Des Moines, Dianne (Angel) Melendez of Waukee, David (Jackie) Schmid of Red Oak, Tim (Charla) Schmid of Red Oak, and Teresa (Mark) Wadhams of Pengilly, Minn., and many great nephews and nieces and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Aug. 22 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Ken Gross celebrant. Burial was in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, or the BPW Iowa Foundation.
