Elks members attend annual fall conference

DES MOINES – Exalted Ruler Brett Black of Red Oak Lodge #1304 attended the Iowa Elks Association Fall Convention in Des Moines on Nov. 6-7. Approximately 400 Iowa Elks and their spouses were in attendance.

The honored conference guest was Grand Exalter Ruler James L. Nichelson of Ohio Valley, Ohio, who was elected as head of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in July, 2009.

The Iowa Elks Association supports the Veterans Homes and Hospitals with the solemn pledge: “So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.” The Elks also sponsor an annual 6th grade essay contest on “Our Flag – What It Means To Me”, provide scholarships to graduating seniors, and conduct the Hoop Shoot national free throw contest for students aged eight through 13. The state Major Project provides fire safety trailers in conjunction with the Iowa Firemen’s Association to educate youth and adults about fire safety in the home.
