Enarson joins the fight against Cancer
A “Links for Hope” chain made of construction paper circles the classrooms at Enarson Elementary in Villisca, representing money students have donated to help the fight against cancer. The chain is the first activity students completed for the Relay Recess program through the American Cancer Society Relay For Life and the first annual Relay Recess in Villisca.
The program engages elementary school students in the fight against cancer through fundraising activities, supporting cancer programs and community service. Students will benefit by learning to set and achieve goals, increasing knowledge of healthy behaviors, building school spirit, making friends and developing a passion for philanthropy.
The Enarson PTO has organized activities for our first annual Relay Recess. Kelsi Bruce, Little Jays preschool teacher, is serving as the school coordinator for the activities.
• Tuesday, April 24, Relay Recess Poster/Coloring Contest, winners will be announced Friday.
• Wednesday, Stanton first grade student and cancer survivor, Kywin Tibbens, will speak; “Wacky Wednesday” dress day.
• Thursday, dress-up theme “Block Out Cancer,” lessons focus on skin cancer prevention, wear hats and sunglasses.
• Friday, local businesses have sponsored the purchase of t-shirts for all Enarson Elementary students to wear to school. Students may bring $1 to purchase a strip of duct tape, which will be used for “Caught on Tape,” during which students will have the opportunity to duct tape paraeducators Jason McCormick and Doug Berggren and/or Principal JoAnne Morenz to the wall.
• 6 p.m., Friday, family activities will begin at the walking trail just south of the elementary. For $1, families can purchase a meal with a hot dog, chips, drink, fruit or bar. Chris Gibler will be DJ, providing music and entertainment. There will be five different stations full of fun activities. Prizes will be awarded for completing all activities.
The support of the Enarson PTO and the community in organizing and sponsoring activities like Relay Recess help us provide our students with the 21st century skills outlined in the Iowa Core Curriculum. At the same time, our students learn and experience these life-long skills they also demonstrate the six pillars of Character Counts Education.
