Errol “Bill” W. Speer, 70


Errol (Bill) William Speer, 70, died on March 31, 2009, at his son’s home in Iowa City, after a battle with cancer.

Bill was born Dec. 17, 1938, to Errol and Beatrice Speer in Marshalltown.

He grew up and attended school in Marshalltown graduating from high school in 1957.

He attended Marshalltown Community College, University of Iowa, University of Northern Colorado, and received his masters degree from NW Missouri State.

He was married to Karen (Baker) (Speer) Huebner in September 1960 and they had four children together.

Bill spent many years as a school teacher, guidence counselor, and basketball coach in Elk Horn, Jefferson, and Red Oak. He was also in business in Atlantic, Ft Collins, Colo., Newton, and Grinnell, before retiring in Cordova, Ill.

He was preceded into death by his mother Beatrice (Hannow) Speer, father Errol Speer; sisters: Betty Foss and Dori Kaisand; brothers: Gene Speer and Ed Speer.

Bill is survived by his four children, Kelly (Speer) Brockish (Therron) of Anthem, Ariz., Todd Speer of Iowa City, Cindi (Speer) Glen of Omaha, Neb., and Chad (Denise) Speer of Greenfield; six grandchildren; sister Lois Poling of State Center and brother Steve Speer of Ariz.

A small private memorial service will be held with family this summer. In lieu of flowers, any memorial donations, sympathies, or well wishes can be sent to Todd Speer, 838 Basswood Ln., Iowa City, IA, 52246.
