Esaias, Soe, win titles at Treynor
TREYNOR—The Red Oak wrestling team took home second place at the Treynor Tournament Saturday.
The Tigers finished with a score of 150.5 points, placing ahead of St. Albert, Griswold, East Mills, Elk Horn-Kimbalton-Exira, A-H-S-T, Southwest Iowa and Treynor. Woodbine finished with a score of 210 points to win the team tournament title.
Red Oak went home with two individual champions. Seth Esaias (182-lbs.) and Matt Soe (160-lbs.) were both champions in their weight classes.
Both wrestlers went 3-0 in the tournament and secured three pin falls.
Esaias in particular had all three of his pin fall wins take place in the first period. Esaias’ tournament win is his fourth straight at Treynor.
Soe meanwhile entered the tournament as a fifth seed, when he won in his weight class.
Geoff Sellers (120-lbs.) finished second at the tournament, while Tanner Mertz (113-lbs.) and Caleb Orme were third. Austin Hale, Bailey Akers, Collin McDowell and Trevor Stapleton each took fourth. Felipe Ramirez and Terry Clark placed fifth.
On Thursday, Red Oak made their regular season debut when they took part in a triangular against Denison and Missouri Valley.
Red Oak defeated Denison, 59-24 and lost to Missouri Valley 48-33.
The Tigers picked up four pinfall victories over Denison. Orme (106-lbs.) won by pinfall over Josef Rogers in 3:18. Also winning by fall were Sellers over Adrian Paz in 1:46, Soe over Ivan Medina in 5:52 and Esaias over Joe Tomsen in 1:17.
Other wrestlers had wins via forfeit, including Mertz, Dakota Petty (126-lbs.), Akers (132-lbs.), McDowell (138-lbs.), Tanner Allensworth (145-lbs.) and Clark (195-lbs.)
Most of the wins against Missouri Valley came via forfeit. Stapleton (152-lbs.) picked up the 6-5 decision victory over Cyan Seamann.
Red Oak will be back in action Thursday night when they face Harlan and Kuemper Catholic at Harlan. The meet starts at 5:30 p.m.
