Firefighters tackle hay Fire June 21

Red Oak firefighters as well as emergency responders from several other neighboring departments tackled a fire on June 21.

At 11:54 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to 2228 148th Street for a report of 50 hay bales near a structure. Upon arrival, firefighters made visual contact with the fire, approximately 15-20 yards west of a pole barn with farm equipment stored inside. There was also farm equipment located to the north of the hay bales as well.

Firefighters protected exposures, including structures and farm equipment, as additional mutual aid was called in for tanker support.

There were no injuries to emergency services personnel or farm staff. A fire pit located northwest of the stacked hay bales was the ignition source for this fire. Assistance was also received from the farm staff in moving remaining hay bales and farm equipment. Fire ground operations were terminated at 3:41 p.m.

The Red Oak Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Stanton Fire Department, the Elliott Fire Department, the Grant Fire Department, the Villisca Fire Department, Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency, the SW Rural Water Association, and Green Tree, who used an excavator to bury the bales.

The Red Oak Fire Department extends its appreciation to the mutual aid agencies and farm hands for the assistance.
