Friday football match-ups
Friday night is the official start to the high school football season in Southwest Iowa.
The Red Oak Tigers travel to Corning to take on the Southwest Valley Timberwovles.
Last year at the home-opener, the Timberwolves edged out the Tigers 32-28.
The Tigers are operating under two new coaches, Dan Stoakes and Ryan Gelber, as well as a different quarterback from the game a year ago.
Southwest Valley enters the game with a duo from last year: quarterback Chance Cobb and wide receiver Addison Bull.
Cobb threw for 185 yards, including one touchdown, and had an 80 yard rushing game, including two touchdowns.
Bull went 115 yards on seven catches.
Stanton/East Mills
The Stanton Vikings challenge the East Mills Wolverines in Malvern.
The Vikings are coming off of a week zero loss to Ar-We-Va, 44-42.
After leading the entire game, the Vikes took a last minute loss as Ar-We-Va rallied to score 19 points in the final quarter.
Keygan Day had 162 yards passing, 38 yards rushing, and accounted for four touchdowns in his varsity debut as quarterback.
Drake Johnson added 83 yards rushing, 68 yards receiving and two touchdowns, including a 74 yard kickoff return.
Defensively, Dillion Rocha ahd 19.5 tackles, including 4.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks.
At last year’s meeting, the Vikes dominated the Wolverines 28-6.
Essex
The Trojans, under first-year coach Chase Heinold have a chance to avenge the 50-0 loss to East Union last year, as they host the Eagles Friday.
The Trojans lost to Bedford in a week zero game, 60-24.
Sophomore Colton Thornburg scored three touchdowns, two passsing and one rushing.
Griswold
The Griswold Tigers host Missouri Valley, a team they lost to 28-0 last year.
Nick Freund led the team with 9.5 tackles last time the teams met.
