Friday Football: Red Oak goes for second win
The Red Oak Tigers try to make it two wins in a row when they travel to Clarinda Friday night to play the Cardinals.
Red Oak had its first win in 20 games last week when they defeated Clarinda Academy, 64-0. The last time Red Oak had won was in Sept. 2010 against Shenandoah.
The Tigers win last week puts them in an interesting spot for District 8. Kuemper Catholic and OA-BCIG are first and second in the district, while Clarinda, Shenandoah, Greene County and Red Oak all have one win in the district, meaning third and fourth place is a possibility for the Tigers.
Based on tiebreakers and several other factors, Red Oak sits sixth right now in the district, but a win against the Cardinals would definitely work to their advantage. Should Red Oak get wins over Clarinda and Shenandoah, it could be enough to solidify their spot in the playoffs. The Tigers play Shenandoah in the final regular season game Oct. 19 at home.
Clarinda has had their share of struggles this season. Their lone win was against Clarinda Academy. Last week, they lost to OA-BCIG, 53-20.
It’s been awhile since Red Oak has last beaten Clarinda. Not since 2006 have the Tigers gotten a win against the Cardinals. Red Oak has lost five straight games against Clarinda, including three that were shutouts.
The Cardinals play their last four games against teams in the district. With the other three close, Clarinda can ill-afford to lose.
This final month of the season will be very interesting in Class 2A District 8.
Kuemper Catholic @ Shenandoah
This one likely won’t be close. Kuemper Catholic has been playing excellent football and appear well on their way to another run through the playoffs. They’re ranked by various outlets in the top 10 of 2A for state and there might not be a road block the rest of the way.
Shenandoah has had their problems as of late. They’ve lost two straight games, including their homecoming game last week against Treynor, 36-25.
Shenandoah’s 1-1 now in the district. A loss wouldn’t necessarily hurt them because Red Oak and Clarinda still need to play Kuemper Catholic.
The Mustangs have beaten Kuemper Catholic once in six encounters. The last win was in 2004.
Greene County @ Roland-Story
This will be the only non-district game for District 8. Greene County is coming off a shutout loss to Kuemper Catholic. They’ll play a Roland-Story team that also has just one win for the season.
Roland-Story is coming off a close loss to East Marshall, 33-31 to be exact. All but one loss for Roland-Story has been by single-digits. PCM, Monroe beat them 27-26 in week 0 and South Hamilton knocked them off 6-3 in week one.
Clarinda Academy @ OA-BCIG
OA-BCIG will have their biggest game of the season next week when they play Kuemper Catholic in Ida Grove., which could determine who wins District 8 For now, they have their focus on Clarinda Academy.
OA-BCIG has won four straight games, their most recent being against Clarinda 53-20. Trever Ryen continues to set himself apart from the rest of the district. Last week, he rushed for 244 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries in the win against Clarinda. His 12 touchdowns this season is double that of everyone else in the district.
Clarinda Academy remains in search of that first win after losing to Red Oak last week. They still have Shenandoah, Greene County and Nodaway Valley left on the schedule.
