Friday Football: Week 3 3A Preview

CARROLL — District play for all of 3A officially kicks off Friday night. Red Oak will look to try and get in the win column on Friday against Carroll.

While the Tigers are 0-2, Carroll won their first two games of the season, including a 21-0 shutout against Dallas-Center Grimes, last Friday.

Red Oak is coming off a 7-0 loss to Shenandoah, marking the first time the Mustangs had won a game since 2007. The difference in the game was an 80-yard touchdown run by Sam Kroepl, which had occurred before halftime.

In last year's meeting, Carroll defeated Red Oak, 45-0. The Tigers haven't played Carroll in previous years as this is Red Oak's second year in Class 3A District 1.

Red Oak Key Players

Nick Leinen

Leinen had a big game for Red Oak last week, rushing for nearly 115 yards. Leinen is sixth in the district in rushing yards with 142.

Seth Esaias

Esaias is the team's leading tackler. He also leads the district in total tackles with 26.

Carroll Key Players

Nate Johnson

Johnson scored all three of Carroll's touchdowns in the shutout against Dallas-Center Grimes, last Friday. Johnson's four rushing touchdowns ties him with Lewis Central's Alex Reed for most in the district.

In other 3A District 1 action taking place Friday night, Glenwood hosts Harlan. Glenwood is in search for their first win of the season, while Harlan tries to avoid starting the year 1-2.

The Cyclones picked up a big win last Friday over Abraham Lincoln, 28-7. Austin Hess rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns to give Harlan their first win of the season.

Glenwood meanwhile is coming off of a 35-7 loss to St. Albert, that had ended early because of storms in the area.

In last season's meeting, Harlan defeated Glenwood 41-16.

Creston will play host to Lewis Central on Friday night, with an opportunity for one of them to go 2-1 overall.

The Panthers are coming off a 13-0 loss to Norwalk, while Lewis Central defeated Thomas Jefferson 28-3.

The Titans defeated Creston last season, 48-7.

Finally, Atlantic will take on Winterset. Both teams are in search of a first win. Winterset lost to Carlisle 27-20, while Atlantic lost to Kuemper Catholic, 30-13.

By the end of the night, one team will get their first win, while the other is 0-3 to start the year.
