Gerald Holm, 86
Gerald Holm, 86, of Red Oak, died Feb. 8, 2010, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Gerald Holm, the son of Lars and Madeline (Kaufman) Holm was born June 23, 1923, near Truesdale. Jerry was raised near Sioux Rapids, until 4th grade, when he moved along with his parents to Rembrandt. While in high school Jerry played basketball all four years; he graduated from Rembrandt High in l942. Jerry entered the U. S. Navy in l943 serving during WW II and was honorably discharged in l946. He returned to the Rembrandt area and worked as a farmhand. Jerry was united in marriage to Dolores M. Ryan on Feb. 16, 1952, at Pocahontas. In 1952, Jerry also began a 35-year career, managing grain elevators in Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska. In 1973, Jerry and Dolores moved to Red Oak when Jerry went to work for the Farmers Mercantile Co-op. In 1987, Jerry retired and they continued to make their home in Red Oak. Jerry was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan and enjoyed watching the History Channel. His greatest love after his family, was farming. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time and visiting with friends over coffee at Burger King and the Rainbow. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, American Legion and V.F.W. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lewis.
Jerry is survived by his wife: Dolores Holm of Red Oak; daughters: Margaret Holm of Des Moines; Jeanette (Bruce) Beckwith of Ankeny; and Jean (Tim) Walker of Prairie City; six grandchildren: Ryan (Gayla) West; Renee West; Jerry West; Kasin (Patti) Beckwith; Neil Young; Brittan (Jeremy) Toland; five great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 12 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Red Oak. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak with Father Ken Gross officiating.
