Girls Regional Basketball Preview: 1A and 2A quarterfinals

The girls regional basketball tournament continues Tuesday night as the 1A and 2A teams from around the state compete in the quarterfinals. All winners Tuesday will be playing in the semifinals Friday night.

1A

In 1A Region 7, Villisca will be home Tuesday night as they host Corning at 7 p.m. This will be the third straight year Villisca faces Corning in the regional quarterfinals.

Corning has won the last two postseason meetings. Last year, they defeated Villisca 42-40 and the year before they won 49-31.

This will be the last postseason for both teams as they combine together in a wholegrade sharing set-up next season.

Also of note, Jill Vanderhoof looks to join her teammate Amanda Focht in scoring 1,000 points for her career. Vanderhoof needs 12 more points to reach the milestone.

Both Villisca and Corning are coming off easy first round wins. Villisca defeated Orient-Macksburg 79-19, while Corning defeated Lenox 77-43.

Ella Akin and Marie Palmer will be the Corning players Villisca needs to watch out for. Both Akin and Palmer are averaging double-digit points per game this season.

The winner of Corning-Villisca will play the winner of East Union-Murray Friday night in Afton.

In Bedford, the Stanton Viqueens will be there as they try to knock off the Bedford Bulldogs. Stanton defeated CAM in the first round, while Bedford had a bye.

Both teams played each other Nov. 27 as Bedford came out on top 62-50.

The Viqueens hope to advance further than they did last year when they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Fremont-Mills. Bedford meanwhile made it all the way to the 1A championship game last season.

The Bulldogs have lost just one game this season.

Both Stanton and Bedford have three players averaging double-figure points this season. Carmen Subbert, Ragen Anderson and Sara Sederburg lead the way for Stanton, while Kayla Lindenmeyer, Savanna Thornton and Peyton Russell lead the way for Bedford.

The winner of Stanton-Bedford plays the winner of Fremont-Mills-Nishnabotna Friday night in Bedford.

2A

Both Griswold and East Mills will be playing in quarterfinal action Tuesday night in Class 2A Region 7.

Griswold will be in Manning to face IKM-Manning, while East Mills heads to Treynor to play Treynor.

Griswold was able to pick up a first round win Saturday against Underwood. They play an IKM-Manning team that had a first round bye. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season.

For East Mills, they're coming off a blowout win at home against Clarinda Academy. They play a Treynor team that had a first round bye.

The other quarterfinal match-ups for 2A Region 7 are Riverside at Audubon and Van Meter at Nodaway Valley.
