Griswold-East Mills split basketball doubleheader
MALVERN — The Griswold girls basketball team got back in the win column to start 2013 when they defeated East Mills on the road last Thursday 43-21.
The Tigers jumped out to a 13-4 lead. The Wolverines offense woke up in the second quarter, but they still trailed 20-12 at halftime.
East Mills got the lead down to five points at the beginning of the third quarter, thanks to a three by Devin Laughlin. However, the Griswold offense attacked and went on a 9-0 run to lead by 11 at the end of the third.
The run continued through the fourth quarter as the Tigers tacked on 14 more points before East Mills scored again. East Mills didn’t score until the last minute of the game when Jessie Doyle was able to make all of her free throws on a three-shot foul.
Trisha Huerta led the way for Griswold with 12 points and 10 rebounds, giving the junior a double-double. Jordyn Sindt scored 10 points and had six steals, while Marquel Brunk scored nine points and had seven rebounds and four steals.
Kendra Croghan, Devin Laughlin and Joni Laughlin each scored five points to lead East Mills.
Griswold also won Friday night, defeating Underwood 41-32. Huerta once again had a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
East Mills defeated Clarinda Academy Friday night 70-16. Katie Sowers had 17 points and eight rebounds, while Devin Laughlin scored 16 and had 11 assists.
East Mills was able to hold off Griswold late to get the 48-41 win in boys basketball action in the second game of the doubleheader.
Both teams traded the lead several times and were often tied. The largest lead prior to the end of the game was six points by East Mills. Griswold never had a lead greater than five points.
The Wolverines were able to overtake the lead and build a cushion late in the third quarter and maintain it during the fourth quarter.
Keegan Wederquist led the way for East Mills by scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, giving the sophomore forward a double-double. Colden Hillyer was close to a double-double, but he finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, as well as four blocks. Jacob Shafer had eight points and Michael Story scored seven in the win.
For Griswold, Devin Bates led the way in scoring with 13 points, while Grant Haynes finished with 12.
The East Mills boys team also picked up wins against Clarinda Academy (62-43) and A-H-S-T (50-44) Friday and Saturday night.
Griswold lost to Underwood 50-41 Friday night.
Both schools will be back in action at home Tuesday. East Mills will face Villisca, in a clash of Corner Conference powers, while Griswold takes on Audubon.
