Guerra, Taylor selected for H-10 baseball team

 The Red Oak baseball team had two players picked for the Hawkeye 10 all-conference team which was released Saturday night.

Carlos Guerra and Jesse Taylor were Red Oak’s representatives on the all-conferece list. Guerra was picked for the second-team, while Taylor was an honorable mention seleciton.

Both players were big for the Tigers during the season.

Guerra was one of the top pitchers for Red Oak during the 2015 season.

The sophomore went 1-4 in six starts and 10 appearances, recording a 3.90 ERA with 49 strikeouts (tied for ninth in the Hawkeye 10) in 41 1/3 innings pitched.

Guerra was also a key batter for the Tigers, with his .309 on-base percentage and 16 hits and a team high 16 runs scored.

Guerra was joined on the second team list by Denison-Schleswig’s Tim Wingrove and Nathan Promes, Harlan’s Brandon O’Neill and Mitch Kramer, St. Albert’s Travis Miller, Atlantic’s Joey Walker, Ryan Hawkins and Tristan Benn, Creston’s Jaden Driskell and Kadon Hulett, Lewis Central’s Joel Thompson and Payton Mehsling, Shenandoah’s Spencer Rice, Glenwood’s Kolten Wilwerding and Kuemper Catholic’s Rease Snyder.

It’s the second straight appearance for Guerra on the Hawkeye 10 all-conference list. Last season, he was picked for second team.

Taylor also went 1-4 for the Tigers with a 4.67 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched.

Taylor was second on the team in multiple batting categories, including batting average (.329), on-base percentage (.405) and slugging percentage (.400). The junior led the team with 23 hits and 13 RBIs.

Taylor was joined on the honorable mention list by Kuemper Catholic’s Tyler Williams, Gage Gunnerson and Austin Sibenaller, Glenwood’s Cole Loeffelbein and Mavrick Decker, Lewis Central’s Brendan Figueroa and Blake Elam, Clarinda’s Bryce Neal, Shenandoah’s Kyle Owens, Denison-Schleswig’s Taylor Thul, Harlan’s Josh Cheek and St. Albert’s Will VanSoelen.

This is also Taylor’s second straight appearance on the all-conference team. He received honorable mention honors last season.

Red Oak finished the 2015 season with a 5-20 record. They lost their opening district round game 9-5 to Clarinda July 11.
