Harry J. Smith, 74

Harry Jerome Smith, 74. of Olathe, Kan., formerly of Red Oak, passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at the Warrensburg Veterans Home in Warrensburg, Mo.

Harry was born to Frank and Beulah (Gordon) Smith July 11, 1937, in McConnelsville, Ohio.  

Following graduation from McCon-nelsville High School, he served in the United States Army. Shortly after his discharge from active duty, Harry moved to Red Oak.  

He married Lynda Pilling in 1962.

He was employed with Union Carbide for nearly 20 years.  

He was united in marriage to Joyce “Lynne” (Bowman) St. John Oct. 31, 1981, in Sunrise Beach, Mo. The couple made their home at Lake of the Ozarks, where they owned and operated H & R Trash. From 1990 to 1999, he was an over the road truck driver. More recently, the couple owned and operated Blue Valley Pool & Spa in Overland Park, Kan.   

He was preceded in death by both parents; a sister, Dorothy Baker; and two brothers, Jodie Smith and Jim Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Lynne; two daughters, Susan Jones, of Raleigh, N.C., and Jennifer Helmstetler, of Overland Park; two sons, Steve (Kelly) Smith, of Ft. Mill, S.C., and Jay Smith, of Independence, Mo.; brother, Roy “Butch”  (Karen) Hoyt, of Waterford, Ohio; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Rena Bowman, of Red Oak; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  

Following cremation, there will be a private interment in the Nyman Cemetery, located south of Red Oak.
