Red-hot Kuemper Catholic downs Red Oak
Top ranked Kuemper Catholic scored a season-high in points while shooting a blistering 60 percent from the field in a 96-47 win over Red Oak in Hawkeye 10 Conference boys basketball Friday.
The Tigers (1-4 overall, 0-3 in the conference) started off the game with some hot shooting of their own with back-to-back three-pointers by A.J. Beeson 3’s, but the Knights (3-1 overall, 3-0 in the conference) responded with quick transition buckets and some threes of their own to extend the lead early.
Kuemper led 30-13 after a quarter and 57-26 at the half. They finished 39-of-65 from the field, including 13-of-26 from behind the arc.
Red Oak coach Jesse Taylor said Carson Roeder controlled the tempo “really well” against the Knight’s heavy ball pressure and jump-trap defense. He finished with 10 points. Reese Montgomery had a solid game with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Taylor praised the play of Dillan Rydberg who was pressed into the starting lineup to help with Kuemper’s size advantage.
“He gave us really solid minutes,” Taylor said. “I also want to recognize our guys off the bench from last night - Kaleb Sebeniecher, Pace Chailie, Dalton Feree, Deacon Bruce, and Osiel Pedersen. They were in and out throughout the second half and played tough and a few of them got their first career varsity points.”
Brock Badding scored 21 points to lead five Kuemper players in double-figures.

Shenandoah outscored Red Oak 18-2 in the fourth quarter in a 51-37 victory in Hawkeye 10 Conference boys basketball last Tuesday.
The Tigers led 21-16 at halftime and 35-33 at the end of three quarters but the Mustangs heated up in the final frame to win going away.
“They hit some big ones in the fourth and they held us to two total points in the 4th quarter as well,” said Red Oak coach Jesse Taylor. “We gave up some important rebounds towards the end of the game that gave them some second chance buckets as well. We are still seeing good things from Reese Montgomery, Carson Roeder, and A.J. Beeson stepped up last night as well.”
Montgomery had a double-double for the Tigers, scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds and AJ Beeson scored 13 points and added seven steals.
Carter Sells scored 16 points and dished out six assists to lead Shenandoah. Ryker Wolf chipped in 14 points and Joey O’Rourke 11.
