Timberwolves win first POI Conference track meet
Southwest Valley hosted the Pride of Iowa Conference Track and Field Championships Monday in Corning.
What started out as a beautiful day turned cold and windy as the night went on, but the Timberwolves boys squad persevered to earn three individual conference champions and two new school records on the way to their first team championship in school history.
Southwest Valley tallied 119 points to runner-up Mount Ayr’s 115 points.  The girls finished seventh with 45 points and one conference champion relay team to go with two new school records.
“Overall, it was a great night for Southwest Valley track and field on our home track,” said head coach Jason Hults. “We now shift our focus to state qualifying in a week and a half and look at what we can get to qualify for the state track meet.”
The Timberwolves boys started the night off with a pair of conference champions in the field events.  Walker Bissell extended the school’s dominance in the boys high jump, becoming the sixth straight conference champion with a top lead of 6-feet.  Brody Crozier repeated as conference champion in the long jump at 19 feet, 1 inch.
The boys added a pair of second place finishes in the field events from Gavin Wetzel in the high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches and Caleb Owen in shot put with a top toss of 46 feet, 3.5 inches.  Bissell added a fourth place finish in the long jump to give the Timberwolves a great start to the meet after the field events.
Crozier earned his second conference gold medal in the 100-meters with a time of 11.22, with Wyatt Shires doubled up in the event with a seventh-place finish with a personal record time of 11.70.  Crozier also set a new school record in the 200-meters with a second-place finish in a time of 22.96.
Wyatt Mendenhall also set a new school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a second-place time of 55.29.  Mendenhall was also second in the 110-meter hurdles with a new personal record time of 15.36.  Wetzel added a fourth-place finish in the 110 hurdles with a personal record time of his own in 16.02.  Crozier added a fourth-place finish in the 400.
In the relays, the Timberwolves secured third place finishes from its shuttle hurdle relay team of Wetzel, Shires, Bissell, and Jayden Dennis and the 4x100-meter relay quartet of Wetzel, Jackson Fisher, Bissell, and Mendenhall.
The sprint medley relay of Shires, Uriah Westerhausen, Fisher, and Mendenhall was fourth.
“The boys did an amazing job tonight,” Hults said. “We told them coming into the meet that every race and every place mattered. Ultimately, it was the races where we pulled a sixth to eighth place that, maybe according to seeding they should not have gotten, was the difference and helped win the meet.  I am so proud of all these boys and the work they have put in over the course of the season to make history tonight.”
Mount Ayr won the girls conference championship with 166 points. Wayne-Corydon was second with a score of 150.
Southwest Valley was led by its shuttle hurdle team of Saige Jones, Alyssa Pearson, Josslynn Benge and Mailee Templeton that won gold in 1:17.08.
“The girls did a great job tonight with the two new school records and conference champs in the shuttle,” Hults said. “The girls team is young overall and has made a ton of progress as the season has progressed.  Finishing in seventh overall this year with 45 points is a great improvement from last season when they finished eighth with 25 points. So, there are a lot of positives to take away and build on from tonight.”
The girls notched two new school records at the meet with the distance medley relay team of Hailey Randall, Ray Helvie, Anistyn Poston and Jones placing fourth in a time of 4:45.95 and the sprint medley relay team of Randall, Templeton, Helvie, and Poston finishing fifth in 2:01.46.
Other medalists for the Timberwolves girls included Helvie in the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inch to place fourth, the 4x800-meter relay team of Taylor Stargell, Erica Mendenhall, Elin Hogan, and Ellie Amdor in third place, Stargell sixth in the 400, Templeton sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a new PR of 17.49, and Pearson in the 400-meter hurdles with a new PR of 1:14.41 for sixth place.
