Tigers grab two second place medals at Lynx tournament

Red Oak’s Jadeyn McAlpin and Elaina Kuipers both picked up second place medals at the Lynx Girls Wrestling Invitational at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln last Tuesday.
Clarinda won the team title with 134 points. Glenwood was the runner up with 126 points. Red Oak finished eighth in the team standings with 60 points.
Tigers’ coach Tiegen Podliska said the tournament featured good, competitive wrestlers scattered throughout.
“The girls came in relatively confident knowing the quality opponents that they have faced thus far and it showed,” he said. “The girls have shown their growth as they immediately are looking to improve by asking questions after the match and acknowledging where mistakes were made, wanting to immediately reconcile it with the next match.
“We were able to control matches in most positions and finish girls with pinfalls. Still fell victim to the great wrestling reality that if you make a mistake it could be the only one of the match.”
Kuipers (125 pounds) went 3-1 on the evening with a pair of falls. McAlpin (135) was 2-1 with two falls.
Jlynn Vasquez (105) went 0-2 but finished third. Amber Rea went 2-2 at the tournament to finish fourth with Lilly Ford adding a fifth-place finish and Bryleigh Mauer a sixth-place finish.
East Mills was 12th at the Lynx tournament followed closely by 13th place Griswold.
Maggie Miles-Crook (115) and Adaya Miles-Crook (155) both placed fourth to lead the Wolverines. Griswold was paced by Aleah Smith’s fourth place finish at 235.
