Iowa Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar accepting registrations
The 2010 Iowa Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar will take place June 11-13, 2010 at Central College in Pella. The seminar gives high school sophomores an opportunity to interact with leaders in business, education, media, government, and volunteerism over the three day seminar. Students will have a chance to meet other young leaders from around the state and discuss many important topics that affect them. The state seminar is planned entirely by local volunteers who believe in students’ ability to make a difference in their own communities.
HOBY helps students develop their leadership potential so that they can go back to their schools and communities to make a lasting, positive impact. HOBY is an international program with seminars in all 50 states and in many countries around the world. Students who attend HOBY seminars have the exclusive opportunity to become part of the HOBY alumni association, which gives them lifelong access to leadership opportunities, including increased eligibility for scholarships and internships.
Two students from the Iowa seminar will receive guaranteed spots at this year’s HOBY World Leadership Congress, a week long conference in Las Angeles, CA that brings students from around the world together with our nation’s leaders for an unparalleled educational and leadership experience. In 2009, participants of the Iowa HOBY seminar also received a renewable college scholarship of $10,000/year from Central College President Dr. David Roe for those alumni who elect to attend Central College for their undergraduate education. This pledge from Central College is a testimony to the quality of the Iowa HOBY program and the enormous potential of its participants.
Attending the Iowa HOBY Leadership Seminar is the first step in opening the door to outstanding, lifelong leadership opportunities for our state’s high school sophomores. The total cost for a student to attend a local seminar is $325. Local volunteers raise $175 per student. The remaining $150 can be paid by schools, community sponsorships, or parents. Space is limited. If you know a sophomore in your community with leadership potential who would like to attend the Iowa HOBY seminar or if you’d like to sponsor an ambassador from your community, please contact Sarah Burke, Leadership Seminar Chair, at 515-570-8619 or lsc@iahoby.org.
