James Pierce, 86, Red Oak, died Monday, March 3, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society, Red Oak.
James Frederick Pierce, the son of Herbert and Maude (Goultry) Chickering, was born April 1, 1927, west of Villisca. James was the youngest of 10 children. When his mother died, James, at age two, went to live with Dan and Annie (Cooney) Pierce of Villisca. Dan and Annie later adopted him. His father, Herbert and family moved to Winterset, but always kept in contact with James. James graduated from Nodaway High School in l945.
He entered the U. S. Army Air Corps in July of l945, with basic training at Sheppard Air Base, Texas. James then received special training in North Carolina, Colorado and California. He was stationed in the Philippines and later Guam, where he was a M.P. guarding Japanese prisoners of war. James was honorably discharged in 1946.
He married Donna L. Bauer Aug. 15, 1948, in Villisca. To this union were born four daughters, Deidra, Dorene, Doris and Denise. James and Donna lived on a farm all of their married lives. They rented farms and then purchased their farm northeast of Red Oak in l985.
James was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak. He served as a trustee for Frankfort Township for 15 years.
James was preceded in death by both sets of parents; wife, Donna, July 16, 2010; four sisters and four brothers.
James is survived by four daughters, Deidra Ash and husband Tom of Lincoln, Neb., Dorene Atkinson and husband Don of Red Oak, Doris Barr of Red Oak and Denise Manard of Red Oak; nine grandchildren, Scott Ash and wife Monica of Lincoln, Kristy Barrett and husband Chad of Lincoln, Mark Ash and wife Melissa of Lincoln, Curtis Patterson and wife Carisa of Red Oak, Jason Patterson of Red Oak, Angie Matthews and husband Tim of Lincoln, Nicole Barr of Omaha, Nathan Barr and Caity Todd of Omaha and Wayne Rogers and wife Lindsay of Omaha; 12 great-grandchildren, Garrett and Ryleigh Patterson, Hayden and Ashlyn Barrett, Jonas Rogers, Eli, Tillie and Madison Ash, Eyan and Baylee Barr and Lucas and Kelsey Matthews; a sister, Betty Messerschmidt of Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Chaney of Stanton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many wonderful friends.
James was cremated and no public services will be held.
A private family inurnment will be in the Arlington Cemetery, Villisca.
