January was National Mentoring Month

National Mentoring Month is the time each year when our nation officially puts a spotlight on the importance of mentors and the need for every child to have a caring adult in his or her life. On January 3, 2011, Governor Chet Culver formally proclaimed January as Mentoring Month in Iowa.
Red Oak Schools has a Mentoring Program, Y.E.S. Youth Experiencing Success. The program not only provides the youth in our community success, but also the adults who mentor and the businesses who sponsor the program. Today’s youth in our community are tomorrow’s adults in our community.
The goal for Y.E.S. is to guidance for youth from a structured and supervised
provide positive support and caring adult by means of a mentoring program.
Children who are in the mentoring program improve their self-esteem. They acquire knowledge, skills and new abilities. They gain social skills. It helps to strengthen their character. The students are encouraged to attain higher performances and better school attendance, which helps them to remain in school and graduate.
The changing needs for our society and economy, the viability of our cities, the welfare of our community demands that each one of us become committed to making this a better world for everyone’s children.
Without planned Mentoring and intervention of a caring adult at critical stages of their development, many young people will not be able to make the important decisions that will affect the rest of their lives.
Say Y.E.S. to a child in your community and become a mentor, make a difference in their life, you won’t regret it.
