Joel Herzberg Family Day planned in Villisca
The community of Villisca is coming together Saturday for a day of fundraising to assist the Joel Herzberg family. The Villisca High School student was critically injured in a snowboarding accident last winter.
Joel Herzberg Family Fun Day begins with a 5K/10K run and walk at 8 a.m. in the Villisca City Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Cost of participation is $15 and medals for first, second and third place will be awarded in several age classifications. Registration begins at 7 a.m.. At 9 a.m., a 3-on-3 basketball tournament begins in the high school gymnasium. A shooting and slam dunk contest will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Food will be available for purchase in the high school cafeteria from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., starting with breakfast until 10 a.m. Luncheon items and other concession items will be served later in the day. Saturday evening in the Villisca Community Building, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., grilled pork burgers, chips, salads and desserts will be served.
The day’s festivities include both a silent and oral auction. The silent auction will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The oral auction will begin at 7 p.m. A variety of items, including sports memorabilia, gift certificates, farm toys and desserts will be auctioned off.

“My only thought, we’re totally overwhelmed by the support people have put into this day,” said Jan Herzberg, Joel’s mother. “We’re thrilled with all the support. We’re excited that Joel can come. We know a lot of people cannot travel the distance to see him or take the time it takes to go see Joel. We are so blessed to from a small community. It’s jus t an awesome feeling and we are blessed.”
Villisca superintendent of schools Teresa Nook said Joel’s friends, teachers and coaches at school pulling for his recovery.
“We are thrilled with Joel’s progress and wish him continued luck as he goes on his path to recovery,” Nook said.
