Letter to the Editor

To the Editor: 

Red Oak Junction Days is one of the biggest events of the year for the community. It is an event that takes a combination of supportive businesses and volunteers to make a success. And, of course, it is an event that requires attention to safety and security for our community members. For this, we rely on the Red Oak Fire Department, Red Oak Police Department and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department – who have always been there when we need them.

However, during Junction Days 2016, I witnessed dedication and community involvement from these departments that far surpassed my expectations. 

Not only were our police, fire and sheriff’s departments present in case of an emergency, they took on extra roles throughout the weekend. From preparing streets for the soap box derby to helping at the beer garden, the police officers jumped in to help, often without being asked. The Fire Department eagerly set up apparatus, helping area children and adults battle in water fights and spent Sunday hosing down the mud volleyball courts (and sometimes players), creating a fun day for the teams and spectators. All of this in a true spirit of community. 

Under the inspirational leadership of Chief Justin Rhamy, Chief John Bruce and Sheriff Joe Sampson, these departments have committed themselves to being a positive presence in the community. I encourage the citizens of Red Oak and Montgomery County to express their appreciation to the men and women who serve and protect us for all they do.
